I am looking at getting a set of handguards. I like the Acerbis Rally Pro the best but man, are they expensive. The Maier Extreme are plastic molded around an aluminum frame like the Acerbis but without the spoiler option. Which are better? Mostly I want them to protect my levers and for winter wind protection. I don't ride off road much. Some of the handguards are only injection molded plastic. Do they provide the protection of the aluminum reinforced ones? I wouldn't think so but I'd like to hear others experiences. Thanks, Brad

Hey Brad, The plastic only ones aren't gonna do diddly-dick for lever protection. Seen em cave 'em personally. I've got the Rally pros and after a few lever saves, they don't seem so expensive. If you're looking to save a little money go with the Moose or Maier aluminum guards (Barkbuster style) then put plastic spoilers on. I don't remember which ones come with holes pre-drilled, but if you get those, it would be easy to modify the stock hand guards to fit. dat brooklyn bum

Brad, I had my bike go over twice in a week, just fell over on the pavement not moving, I was a little bummed that I scratched up my $100 Rally Pros until I realized that it fell over hard enough to bend the stock bars and would have taken out at least my right lever or maybe the master cylinder. They also do a good job of keeping the wind off, worth the money. John

Maier woods pro (?) have the holes drilled and with a little cutting with a dremel or whatever the Green (00) Kawasaki plastic can be installed right over the aluminum bars. Stock look, strong lever protection, wind protection, and cheap (under $30) for the whole deal. --- guymanbro@... wrote:

Used a set of Maier(not aluminum) that had spoiler options, and totally protected what they're supposed to the times I've gone down. That includes a long slide along a wet, slick paved road.--PHW

I had trouble with the Acerbis, so I purchased Maier from the factory in Nevada City, California, (they have a web site with the 1-800 number. They fit real well, protect you levers and block the wind better than stock, and I am glad to say they work well in a fall. John

It seems Maier has several models available (Deluxe Woods Pro, Plastic Guards for the Deluxe Woods Pro, Universal Extreme Handguards, Universal XC Pro Handguards, add-on spoilers for the XC Pro). Hi Les, I also have the Maier handguards. Got mine from from Chaparral on sale FOR $24.97. I have the..Deluxe Woods Pro Aluminum Handguards Part#59525. New catalogue price...$35.99 I also have the...Maier Bark Buster/Woods Pro Plastic Handguards to put on them. Part#59512-$21.99 I like these aluminun handguards. They mount easily, they are VERY solid, and you don't have to trim your levers as you have to do on some other brands. The plastic addons are larger then stock. They look like they give great coverage (I heard that they do,I haven't used them yet) It's nice in this hot weather that I can leave the plastic off. I uploaded a photo of my homemade clutch cable boot. It's in the photos section under modifications. I realize Kawi made one for the KL600, but if you're buying a set of Acerbis Rally Pro's, you are going to lose the protection the stock handguards aafford the clutch, and you get a nifty plastic piece in the kit that you can make into a super heavy duty boot with one cut of an exacto knife and a zip tie. Next issue, how to make ABS for your KLR with hot sauce packets. CA Stu

I have those same guards....I think. Doesn't that clear plastic piece go INSIDE the handlebar? Maybe I screwed the pooch on that one. (No offence Punky)
