oil question

Hey - I put 5W30 oil in my bike, due to not clearly reading the details. It's had less than 100 miles on this oil, all highway. Is it imperative that I change the oil to 15 weight, or is 5 weight OK? Most of my riding is 40-70mph on pavement. It's a cheap fix, but if it's ok as it is, I'll leave it alone until next oil change. Thanks Ryan

Where did you get the idea that it was a good idea to put oil with a cold viscosity as high as 15W into your bike? Such an oil may not provide adequate lubrication at startup (though really this would only be a problem in the winter -- I would not run 20W oil however, in any season). The number that matters when you're warmed up and rolling down the road is the second number, the "hot" viscosity. 30 is on the low end of the acceptable spectrum for a KLR but is acceptable. The number that matters when you're starting the bike is the first number, the "cold" viscosity. You want it as low as possible so long as the total viscosity range doesn't exceed about 30 points for dino oil or 40 points for synthetic oil. 5w30 oil is fine. The best oil you can get, without breaking the bank, is probably 5w40 Rotella T Synthetic. Motorex makes a 10W50 synthetic motorcycle oil. It is the factory-fill oil for my KTM and I run it in the summertime (in the winter I run Rotella T Synth). I wince every time I buy a quart -- the price is outrageous. Thor

I'd compromise and go 1000 then dump it. 10W-30 ends up as 5W-20 after a few k miles anyway. KLR's break down oil viscosity like mad. RM

Based on what I've read, I don't think the concern should be the "15' but the "30". The KLR engine, like most bike motors, really need the viscosity of 40 or above for proper lubrication. For the few bucks for a couple of quarts I'd get it out of there, just for peace of mind. I also prefer synthetic. Just for the peace of mind.

Pretty much what he said....... Remember, the KLR650 is a ball and roller bearing bottom end. Sometimes people forget this. The surface loading is much higher in this type compared to a plain bearing type. Recent lab tests showed Amsoil 20-50 sheared down 25% (in a KLR650)in 2K miles. I've seen 10-30 run out like water after 3K miles. all the best, Mike

I use Castrol synthetic 5w 50 and add about a cup of Lucas. I have to special order through local parts store and it is about $7.00 a quart. Everything I have ever heard about Lucas says "snake oil".

I tried running Delo 400 15W-40 diesel oil in my KLR during the winter-wrong choice, at least during the winter. It started a knock at cold startup, do I think, to lack of good flow to the top end (cams) in the cold.Went back to a 10W-40 and the cold start knock went away.Right now, I'm running the Rottela 5W-40 synth oil.It seems fine so far. Your 10W-30 might be fine depending on the outside temps. If it was my bike, I'd run it for 1000 miles and take a real good look at the oil then. But its your bike-if it makes you feel better by all means drain it out.
