My Problem is that when I changed the oil into a clean pan it looked good, no metal particles but when I changed the filter there was a fair amount of metal in the housing and in the filter. Is this to be expected on a new motorcycle engine? What do I mean by a fair amount? 500 mile service
My first change I about crapped myself when I pulled the filter and
seen the flakes of metal, the oil had like a silerish metallic tint
also, but since then nothing.
My guess is transmission wearing in, more than engine. Unlike Cars
and Trucks the oil is single purpose (engine) on the KLR its a dual
purpose (engine/tranny).

Do the valves really need to be adjusted after 500 miles? For the
people that have done this at 500 miles, are you seeing them out of
adjustment?

mine weren't, but they were close. if i had had valve shims I probably
would've shimmed them up to max spec.
i'll probably have to do it again, which sounds annoying now. i'd
recommend doing it and shimming them up to max.

First check at 679.7 miles. Two of the four valves were far enough off to get new shims. One (the right intake) was fully out of spec (at .076MM / .003"). So, I would say that it is clearly a good idea to check them at the 500 mile service. -- Doug Herr doug@...> Do the valves really need to be adjusted after 500 miles? 500 mile service
Hi All, I just had the dealer do my 500mile service on my 07 KLR650.
The bike ran OK when I brought it in. Not great, just OK. It now runs
like a different machine. Starts easy, minimal choke needed, smoother,
and faster as well. The carb float was way off, and one of the intake
valves was too tight. Oil change, filter, all all the rest. Plus they
gave me a large can of chain lube. All for $94.00 I was thrilled! I'm
very pleased with this bike. I plan on doing the doohickey myself
shortly.

I would gladly pay $94 for a 500 mile service that is done correctly...which is what you got IMHO. Unfortunately many of our friends on the web have not received what they paid for from their dealers. You should post the name of the dealer you used.

I hear I should expect to pay around $200+ here in CA. Because of my accident, [can't believe it!] I don't get to do my 500 mile service, probably for another month.

500 mile service
I am rapidly approaching my 5oo mile break in service on my '07
KLR. What should I be asking my dealer to service... My dealer is
prodominatly a Harley Dealer and has not impressed me with their
knowledge of the KLR. I am stuck with them because I am not very good
at turning wrenches. Any guidance would be appriciated.
Thanks

The 500 mile check is not hard and would be a good way for you to introduce
yourself to the art of motorcycle maintenance.
Please consider buying a Clymer, read the articles on the 650 FAQ and
download pertinent stuff from marknet.
AND, reach out to the group when you need a little guidance.
