Try leaning the bike against the garage wall or something so the right
side it slightly over.
If you noticed there is a small hole close to where the cover sits, if
you lean the bike for a while the oil will drain down the hole and
back to the bottom end.
Discovered that the "first" time I changed oil and pulled a dripping
oil soaked filter out.

There's supposed to be a vale inside the tube? Mine is a hollow tube with a hole on two sides....

Are you able to actuate the valve inside the tube? Use a small
screwdriver to push it. Sometimes they get jammed up.
And, not that this would likely make a difference, but what brand of
filter are you using?
Lastly, when you say oil gushes out, how much are we talking about?
I change my oil with the bike on its sidestand, so that helps keep
the oil inside the filter housing. The filter pulls a little oil
with it when I pull it out, but it's easily absorbed by a paper towel.

Great! I have heard of folks managing to get the tube in backwards, so I wanted to double-check that with you.> As always, narrow end toward engine... the only way it fits.

Yup, without a valve I am pretty sure you are not getting any/much filtration. See: http://klr6500.tripod.com/oil-filter-tube.jpg Visible hole on the left is open. I remove the
drain bolt and the oil drains as usual. When I remove the filter cover,
alot of oil flows out, as if the oil can't settle back into the
engine. Any ideas?

Kevin, that sounds normal. You don't WANT that oil to "drain back into the engine" when you shut it off - if it did, then during the next engine start, the engine would have no oil pressure as the oil pump was refilling the oil filter cavity. It's designed the way it is to have oil pressure as early as possible at each engine start.

I agree. When I first did an oil change I was surprised when I removed the
cover, and very little oil was there. I was expecting a mess.
Second oil change, I had a mess.
The difference is overnight sitting, compared to a change after running.
Let it sit overnight.
I live in CA, so heating the oil before draining is not a concern. If your
bike is sitting outside in 20 degree weather, then you should probably heat
oil up a bit before draining.

It's normal for some oil to run out of the filter housing. Why is this a concern?
Watch out about poking the by-pass valve too strongly as there's no need to damage the coil spring or burr the bore.

I always do oil changes in cars and bikes after getting the oil nice and hot. ed A17
