If installed in the proper direction, I think the likelihood of failure is rare. If installed backwards, I'd say you have a 50-50 chance of losing it. My friend Andres rode for who knows how long with a missing clip, but the side plate was such a tight press-fit that nothing happened. He noticed the missing clip when he was lubing his chain and figured he put it on backwards. That was back when he was an inept noob.

Same here; you can use my rivet tool and/or I keep a couple used but usable spare chains on hand for folks in a pinch. Mark

FYI anytime you let the bike roll backwards in rocks you can take the clip off your master link. I did the same thing your buddy did, including a three hour highway ride home, and found the sideplate pressfit holding it all together. So the sideplate has a pressfit for a good reason, and you don't reuse a master link. Since then, when I install a master link, I press on the sideplate using a motion-pro tool, then clean the pins and plate with a q-tip and solvent. Then I seat the clip link in a bit of quicksteel, and smear over the top so the clip slides past a rock instead of catching it. Devon Sent via BlackBerry from Cingular Wireless
