Yes! Consider that very little slack at the steering head is required to affect the front wheel. I like to have a slight preload (one or two thousandths of an inch) on steering head bearings. You won't likely be able to feel slack until it approaches 10 thou plus. Don't forget to repack the bearings with a good, water-proof grease such as a boat trailer wheel bearing grease. When you reinstall the bearings it is best to over tighten the bearing adjustment nut quite firmly (don't go nuts!) while moving the steering continuously from side to side. The purpose for over tightening is to ensure that the bearings are firmly seated and to displace grease which may cause the bearing to float. If excess grease is left between rollers and races the bearings will develop excess clearance very soon when the excess grease is forced out. The reason for continuous movement while tightening is to prevent the rollers from overloading the contact area. Back the bearing adjustment nut off and then snug it up to give a slight pre-load of 0.001 to 0.002 inches. This is enough preload to cause a slight drag when turning the bars with the front wheel off the floor. HIH Norm [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Ms. Joan, I was wondering if you could expand on any additional tools that might be added to a modest tool kit to aid in diagnosing/removal/correcting your carb problems. I followed some of your "adventures", but between WL, OBS, and a few other lists, I tend to miss a few things, ya know? Any tool wisdom you could share would be appreciated! I've had my KLR for only about 2 months - still learning alot about it, and have a decent oil burning problem - so I'll have my hands full during the damp season. Thanks, blueberry kitty! ;-) -- Cheers, Shawn 2006 XB12X Uly 1997 KLR Portland, OR "Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted." - Martin Luther King, Jr.
