belt drive klr650?
Ummmm you serious ?
Belt drive on a KLR ?
I can grind up a chain in under 10k, could imagine a belt going maybe
1k miles maybe, unless of course I never left pavement in which casae
a KLR would be silly.

There was a guy who took a Harley all over the world. He was continually breaking belts, and it generally took around six hours for him to replace one. What I'd like to see is an enclosed chain guideway that included an oil bath. Our cam chains last the life of our bikes. Why can't our drive chains? Granted, they're carrying a heavier load than the cam chains, but it's the grit and dirt that wears them out, not the load (especially with something as pitifully weak as the KLR engine). I suspect I'll get 20K+ miles out of my DID X-ring thanks to my ScottOiler. But think how long my chain would last if it were kept completely clean and lubed? _E> > Ummmm you serious ? > > Belt drive on a KLR ? > > I can grind up a chain in under 10k, could imagine a belt going maybe > 1k miles maybe, unless of course I never left pavement in which casae > a KLR would be silly.

Unless you could enclose the belt drive like was done with early Honda Dreams, there would be no way to prevent stones and other debris from entering the belt and pulley (sprocket). Anything of any substance between the belt and pulley causes huge problems by tearing the belt, gouging bits out of the belt, breaking belt internal cordage, etc. "Timing" belts are just not on for the KLR's kind of application. Given that, someone probably could sell some as there are lots of other poorly thought out products on the market which are selling well. Just my $0.02, Norm>a KLR drive belt conversion. If a >mechanic/mechanist could figure out a do >it yourself kit,I bet they >could sell a LOT of them.

belt drive klr650?
Belt drive won't cut the mustard in heavy sand, mud and gravel. It is
a trouble free method of delivering power but only for street use as
I see it.
The Buell Ulysses has protected its belt pretty well but I still
don't think it would work in mud (unless it was fully enclosed).

vietnam motorcycle trip...anybody been?
Heading to Vietnam on the 30th to ride bikes from
Saigon to Hanoi for two weeks with a couple buddies.
Anybody done that trip? Want to check out some of
the major battlefields around Au Shau, Khe Sahn, maybe
way up north Diem Bien Phu.
Need to check out a place 20 miles west of Da Nang
where my dad was fighting, but that's about it as far
as itinerary.
Appreciate any feedback.
Erik in San Diego
