We went through this back in May... The unit is much cheaper from the
original manufacturer,
http://www.datel.com
$30 for LCD, $50 for LED.

The ex-Navy electrician inside me would have a word here. Water analogy:
volts are like pressure: amps are like flow rate. An almost dead battery
will still show the rated volts with no load. A voltmeter might be useful
to show the voltage the charging system is putting out: monitors the voltage
regulator, mainly. A friend has a "battery indicator" on his cluster: an
LED changes from red (showing a net discharge of the system) to green
(showing a net charge taking place).

Your GPS probably has a voltage indicator built in.
I saw the LED voltage indicator that Jake mentioned on a KLR. The rider
said he got it at the Honda Hoot a couple of years ago for around $20.

I mounted my voltmeter on the back of the head light cover by
fabricating a mount from 1/8" thick x 1 Aluminum angle. This is
easily cut & bent to fit in a home shop. Use double sided mounting
tape for mounting. I suggest securing the wiring to the angle using
a thin tie wrap to act as a strain relief. Also I've had very good
luck using "clear" mounting tape, available at Wal-mart. This tape
is waterproof, sticks well but can usually be peeled off if
necessary. It's sort of like a strip of that gummy adhesive they
stick stuff in magazines.

It has been raining for the past 2 days here, and I decided to look at
my bike tonight to see if my cheap digital clock was still working
after the rain. Well the clock works fine, but apparently the voltmeter
I installed isn't waterproof...it now has water inside it! It really
doesn't surprise me, since it was a very cheap gauge and I only used it
because I had it left over from another project. Now I need to find a
decent voltmeter thats waterproof and fits in the same 2 1/16" opening.
Anyone have suggestions for an affordable, waterproof voltmeter?

Try a boat store. West marine, Boat US, Boater's World, one of those.

Hi Rev:
I've got my stock windshield in a box in the corner of my garage right next to my gas bar. You know what I mean, the argon, nitrogen....heeheeheeheeheelium. Yep ... I like to keep a variety of gasses available for different styles of riding I might encounter. You know what I mean. Use the argon if I want to ride sophisticated, nitrogen for technical riding and of course the heeheelium for riding that will require the need for achieving exceptionally high elevations and soft as a pillow landings.
Oh, by the way. Don't use methane. Tried it once and got a slow leak. That was the day my guard skunk chewed through it's rope, never to be seen again. That was truly a sad day. Have you ever tried to find a skunk that doesn't have a hair trigger? Hard to find my friend, hard to find....

How do you find the stock windshield for buffetting?

Hi Don,
I find that the stock windshield causes me absolutely no buffeting
problem, well, for over 2 years now.
I keep it chained, and in a box in the basement so it can't ever beat
me up again. After letting the stocker beat me up for nearly a year,
I wasn't looking for restitution, I wanted revenge. I now go 'sans-
windshield' and have never looked back.
Yes Virginia, going with out a windshield is 'free-farkle'.
revmaaatin.
