Thanks for all the feedback, I went with the oval shape for ease of construction. This was really my first bending / brazing project and didn't want it too complicated. Since then I have decided that the rack was actually strong enough to mount some "harder" luggage to it. I mounted some actionpacker dry boxes to the racks to have some dry lockable storage.
