I also ride a 2005. My coverage is similar but I have $15K liability and
property damage plus free towing up to four times per year. (I needed it
for my Triumph.) I can't say exactly what my annual bill is yet because I
switched bikes in the middle of the policy year, but it is probably around
$285 or $290. I am in California and I am 50 years old with no speeding
tickets or accidents in the last five years. I am insured with Progressive.

Hi Darren,
My insurance is through GMAC - here's the numbers on my KLR:
2002 KLR 650
Full coverage 50K Person, 100K Accident
$500 deductible
25K Property damage
NO layaway, no tickets
$1500 Accessory coverage
I also have 2 bikes covered with them so I'm sure there's a multi-bike
discount
Total for year $248
Tom

That's just the KLR. I also have a 250cc Super Sherpa dual sport on the
policy (it's my wife's bike) so there are 2 drivers also. The Sherpa is
$148 annually for the same coverage as the KLR (Total of $396 for 2 drivers,
2 bikes). Oh, and this is in California (Bakersfield).

Is that the total for both bikes or for each bike?
Thanks,
Mark

I have had my KLR for a year now and when I got it, I just added it on
to my existing auto policy and went riding. Its about time that I took
a look and determine if I am getting a decent deal. I know there are
numerous factors to effect rates, but does anybody have any ball park
estimates on what should I expect to pay for full coverage, assuming a
good driving record and living in rural Idaho.

I'm a 55 yr old male, newly licensed rider looking to buy KLR but
upset with being told that full insurance in Ontario CDN is in the
range of $1700 CDN. Do ins. companies consider this bike a "sports"
series? What are your experiences?

I think that the KLR was the least expensive bike to insure that I was
looking at. Less even than a Ninja 250, and this is for liability alone.

Yes, some companies -- particularly larger ones with a lot of non-motorcycle business -- do consider the KLR650 a "sport bike larger than 600cc", so you will get the same rate as if you got a motorcycle license today and went out and bought a GSX-R750 -- maybe the ultimate squid bike -- tomorrow. If you ask for a quote for a 600cc sport bike, you will get a _lower_ rate! Companies that specialize in motorcycle insurance have more underwriting categories, so they can give individual bikes within what would be a single category for, say, GEICO or Progressive, different rates. So, for instance, I was able to get comprehensive coverage for my KLR650 from Bike-Line for about half the cost of just liability coverage from Progressive. So it can really pay to shop around with insurers. I would usually _never_ recommend buying insurance through a vehicle dealer but I have had several friends get good results this way because the carriers that market through motorcycle dealers are in fact often the ones that take the time to do the actuarial work to be able to undersell the big guys on rates for "oddball" bikes like the KLR. If you can't find a specialized bike insurer (I don't know if Bike-Line sells in Canada; I suspect not) any other way it is one thing you could try.
