nklr - question on riding gear
I have a similar observation that lots of riding pants come with
little or no hip padding. I cut set of hip pads out of some 1/2"
closed cell foam (like sleeping pad material) using the pattern from
some old MX riding pants with the token 1/16" pad. I keep 'em in place
with a little clip that attaches at the waistline.
In general, there are two basic protection issues for KLR riding:
1. Impact on relatively slow off-road riding.
Solution - good padding in all the pointy places plus chest, ribs &
back. IMHO, minimum for off-road includes helmet, MX boots, gloves,
knee & elbow pads. For a day of single track technical riding I add
roost shield & rib pads.
2. Abrasion on high speed pavement.
Solution - Leather is best. Second is quality kevlar or cordura, then
thick/tight woven denim (like Carhart), last is movie-star prewashed
fashion jeans. Good CE armor in all the right places is important
because you get some impact protection too. Ankle protection is
something overlooked by some riders, if a bike drops and traps your
lower leg, you'll be thankful you weren't wearing tennis shoes. I like
to wear Redwing low heel boots, dry, not drafty, breathable &
comfortable.

best tire prices?
Sizes are 90/90-21 and 130/80-17. Southwest Moto has good prices and fast service. Make sure you compare prices with shipping. Southwest Moto has free shipping on two tires. The tires also come boxed.

nklr - question on riding gear
If you insist on wearing jeans or cargo pants then get a pair of
knee/shin guards and a padded pair of shorts to wear under. If you
intend to ride in the winter then a waterproof pair of riding pants
with built in pads are the ticket. Look at First Gear Air pants as
they have a mesh pant with zip in WP liner but if you live where it
gets below 50 degrees then you will want heavier pants, but be sure
they have armor.
I use a closed face street helmet and would love an Arai XD but I'm a
cheap arse. Sunglasses work OK unless its real dusty and you are not
in front then goggles or foam fitted glasses are needed.
Heavy work boots work if they are waterproofed. I'd like a pair of
the SIDI Discoveries but again, cheap arse.
Get gloves, and have fun.
