I make it a point to carry a squirt bottle of honey in a side pouch. If I ever get attacked by a bear, I plan to squirt it on my wife and run like hell. don

Of course, in that case the bear is likely to see you as prey, and decide to chase *you* while ignoring your wife. From the Yosemite guide: "DO NOT feed, taunt, or tease the bears. Bears are stronger than you. (If you'd like to see how strong they are, take a look in the Valley Visitor Center.) If you feed, taunt, or tease them, they may attack you. There has never been an unprovoked attack by a black bear in Yosemite. If a bear approaches, make noise, wave your arms, and throw SMALL stones at the bear. (The point of throwing objects at the bear is to scare it away-- not to injure it!) Do not chase the bear. Do not run from the bear. Bears run faster than you and climb trees better and faster than you. "If a bear approaches you because you have food and is not frightened by the above measures, leave the food and walk away. Do not argue with the bear. NEVER try to retrieve anything from a bear." -E

I am still planning my Arctic trip in 07'. I have felt I need to bypass Canada, as they will not allow me to pass through with my hand gun, and I really cannot imagine camping in Alaska without a big gun. The ferry ride to bypass Canada is hella expensive, and I started wondering, What would happen if you sprayed a bear down with Pepper Spray and tazered him? I dont relish the thought of letting a Bear get close enough to either Tazer or Spray, but if it would in fact stop the Bear? Any thoughts/experiences? --- WEST HOVLAND wrote:

I understand that the accepted method is to use a special bear spray that isn't the same as human pepper spray. I ordered mine on line but haven't had the need for it yet-thank goodness. don

If playing dumb means being loud, obnoxious, and intimidating, you have it down pat as to what to do if you run into a black bear :-). The goal is to let blackie know that you're the biggest baddest predator on this planet, in hopes that he will then refrain from making you his meal. The very *last* thing you want to do is something that would tell blackie, "oh boy, LUNCH! Long pig!". All of which is inapplicable to grizzlies, of course, since a grizzly that attacks you is just telling you "Get out of *my* territory, you loser!" and will lose interest (hopefully) after he "teaches you a lesson". But most of us don't live where there are grizzlies. A black bear that attacks you is intent up on making you his dinner. You can't out-run a bear, and you can't out-climb a bear, so convincing him otherwise is the task if you run into a black bear who decides that eating your food isn't enough, he wants to eat *you*. Note that bear attacks are *very* rare, so they're not something to obsess about either way. Just do the common sense things (store food and toothpaste well away from your tent in a bear canister when in bear country, etc.), and don't worry about it. Just don't do the wrong thing (run) if you encounter a black bear, because, like with a cat, a bear things anything running from it is one thing and one thing only: "Lunch!". -E

Same thing that happens if you do it to a human. He becomes very, very angry and wants to kick your ****. *NOT* something you want to do to a grizzly bear. Also tazer guns are regulated in most states and what's available to the public won't penetrate a bear's fur to stick into its hide. Note that there is a big canister of pepper spray sold by camping goods store near bear country for dealing with black bears, it's usually called "bear spray". In a few cases it's been useful. Usually it's not, because by the time a bear is close enough to you to get a full dose of this stuff in the face (the only place that counts), you're already on your way to being lunch and don't have time to deploy it (bears are *FAST*). And you can't carry pepper spray into Canada either. Best to exercise prevention instead. As for the notion of avoiding Canada because you don't feel secure without carrying a portable arsenal with you -- note that it is perfectly legal to carry valid hunting weapons into Canada. You must declare them at the border and pay a $50 fee, but if you're in transit to Alaska that's pretty much it. Handguns are verbotten, of course, but really, any handgun big enough to take out a grizzly bear is pretty much unusable by anybody other than Ah-nohld anyhow. -E

In Canada you can buy and carry something referred to as a "bear-banger". I use them myself, when in the back country and they are very effective. As a matter of fact, most forestry workers and loggers usually carry them. It is the size of a pen with a spring and a stiker in them and you attack a small explosive cartridge to the end of it, which can be set off with that spring and striker. It will then be propelled a couple of hundred feet and then go off like a flare gun with a pretty good bang. The trick is to scare the bear away and not to wound it, as you would with a hand gun. That just makes the bear mad at you, and that is not a good thing. By the time you can use bear spray, it is usually too late, although it is not a bad thing to have with you for other animals, even the 2-legged ones. You sure are right about not wanting to wound a bear. A small pump shotgun in a side sling is just the ticket. Put some good slug ammunition in that puppy and feel safe. Trust me, you won't "wound" the bear and you will be much more assured of a safe trip. --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, Gorm Larsen wrote:

I wrote this thinking a shotgun was OK to take across the border. Is this prohibited as well? --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "clearprop5" wrote:
