The Odometer and tripmeter are accurate from the factory. They function independent of the "hopeful" speedometer. I can guarantee this, I've ridden lots of dual sport rides with a roll chart, and they've always worked perfectly. The reason your speedo matched the one at the dual sport is because both your speedo's were off and read the same. This works fine as it will still keep you on track. Mark Sampson

What part of that do you consider a no no ? Rick a17 Keith Saltzer wrote:

dont let it bother you. It'll keep you from getting tickets and still let you ride it like you stole it. Also, never ride and let traffic blow past you. your better off riding a tad faster than most everybody else and call the shots while using a turn signal. I always try to make sure there are a couple of crazy cagers going faster to take the threat of a ticket off me.

The speedometer is off by about 8% on all KLRs, but for some reason the odometer is dead-on. When traveling at 120 km/hr my GPS tells me that I am actually going 112 km/hr It also works as a ticket prevention measure, to a certain degree. You will also find that the speedometer is temperature sensitive. When I first take my bike out in the Spring, and the temperature is pretty cool, the speedometer will be more accurate. Don't ask me why or how! Gorm l., BC, Canada rick wrote: I've got a new 2005 KLR. For breakin, my wife and I rode it from western Colorado to Moab last weekend taking turns. Keeping at the recommended 4000 rpm for the first 500 miles, the speedometer was reading 60-65 mph, but traffic was blowing by me. I finally had my wife set the cruise in our truck at 65mph and followed her. To keep up I was going 70-75mph on the bike speedo. Is this common on the KLR's? Is there a fix? Is it warranty? The speedo on my R100S usually tracks my GPS speed pretty well. It's not the original speedo, however; it was intended for a much lower final drive.

Yep, the Sigma computers are a great addition/replacment for the optimistic KHI speedo. Set mine up mounted just behind the rear brake master cylinder on the right side of the bars. Calibrated it using the roll-out method to get circumference of the wheel. Then double checked it with one of DC's finest [DC Police buddy of mine who happened to have a radar equipped car for the day]. Sigma was spot-on & 8% lower than the OEM unit. Like others said - you need the longer rear-wheel sending unit [mount & cable]. -dc2wheel

It's a common problem. Mine was also about 8% fast. I "fixed" it by removing the speedo from the housing, twisting the needle 4 mph slower on the shaft, and reassembling. Works like a charm. Now at my typical riding speeds it's only 1 mph slow, right on, or 1 mph fast. I love it. Bill Watson Phoenix

BC1200 and BC1600 Also know as the Sigma sport. I have a BC1200 and I can't get it to read. I've tried a few different magnets, I've tried 2 different cradles / pickups. If I take a magnet and run it by the pickup while holding the pick in hand I get it to read. But if I mount it on the bike it stops reading. I made sure I had the 5mm or less clearance (I even had the magnet so close that it would touch) and still no reading. I'm guessing that it has something to do with my rotor or location of the pickup (I have a KLR600) in relation to the brake cal. I'm using off the shelf magnets from a hardware store. The bar magnet that cam with the BC1200 would not fit on my spokes. I was thinking of getting the blade rim stile magnet from sigma to see if that would work. Then I came a cross trail tech's web site and they have rotor bolts with the magnet right in the head so I may give that a go. But in the mean time any thought on why I can't get a reading? -----Original Message----- From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com [mailto:DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Harry Myhre Sent: Thursday, June 02, 2005 10:21 PM To: 'dc2wheel'; DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Subject: RE: [DSN_KLR650] Re: speedometer way off What's the model number of the sigma?

95 is not a pleasant ride. Its mostly boring. I'd find I way to cut over to 395 somewhere between Beatty and Tonapah. There is a highway from Beatty to Lone Pine. About 15 miles south of Goldfield you can head for Lida and come out at Big Pine. After Tonapah you can follow US6 around to Benton and then pick up 120 to Lee Vining. And by the time you get to Fallon you might as well head for Reno and 395. Pat G'ville, NV
