OK, I was trying really hard to stay out of this debate, but I just got to throw in my two cents here. Yup, people kill people, they just use guns to do it. Pit bulls kill people, but why? Do they think we are prey? If so why don't they all kill people? Why would a properly fed properly trained dog, be it pit bull or any other breed, have to kill a person for prey, ie. food, unless its owner has either neglected it, mistreated it, or trained it too? Even if they didn't, and the dog just turned out to be a killing machine, shouldn't you as the owner know what it is and act responsibly, ie. don't set it on the neighbours, don't let it run around without a leash, or muzzle, or best yet, if the dog is that dangerous have it euthanized. In other words, I think, its just another example of people killing people, they just left their gun at home and got the dog to do it. Gerald who has owned a pit bull (half breed) for the past 7 years, best dog I ever owned. -----Original Message----- From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com [mailto:DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Kyle Sent: May 12, 2005 7:26 PM To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Re: Re: NKLR Denver Seizing and Killing your Pit Bulls Jesus H. I agree guns don't kill people, people kill people. I am a law enforcement officer in Natural Resources. My primary job is to check thousands of law abiding hunters who carry various types of firearms. On the other hand, I also deal with individuals who spend their lives breaking the law. These are the ones I am always concerned with...not the law abiding, gun owner. Remember this, criminals are criminals and do not abide by laws. It is ignorant to think firearms could ever be totally abolished. Many firearms are produced in other countries...it's interesting how many illegal narcotics come from other countries. What makes anyone think that criminals would abide by a law to illegally carry a firearm? Remember they are criminals and don't abide by laws. What would be better? To keep criminals wondering if the next subject is armed or to know that he is unarmed. Just something to think about. I do respect your opinion. However, I feel you may have been misguided by skewed statistics and the media. The problem is that everybody knows that if they point their gun at a person and pull the trigger, bad things happen to the person the gun is pointing at. Most of the pit bull maulings and deaths that I've seen mentioned in the media over the years happened out of the blue. "I don't understand what happened, Fang is just so gentle with our children, why did he decide that our neighbor's toddler was an appetizer?!" I.e., it happens unexpectedly, because DOGS ARE NOT MACHINES. Unlike guns, they have a brain and their own set of hard-wired instincts that we as dog owners only imperfectly understand. Thus while most people know what sets off a gun (you pull the trigger!), few people seem to know what sets off pit bulls. I'm not saying that pit bulls should be banned. I'm saying that no matter how gentle Fang seems, he is a loaded weapon with a hair trigger that is easy to accidentally set off, and he should be treated accordingly. Some pit bull owners, alas, refuse to admit this, and thus we end up with laws like the Denver pit bull ban, which happened after two people were killed and several others severely injured by pit bulls that, their owners maintained, "were perfectly gentle with our children, we don't know what set them off!" When pit bull owners refuse to treat their pit bull like a loaded weapon, well... pit bulls aren't needed for modern society to functin (unlike the automobile) and aren't protected by the Constitution (unlike guns), so if it comes down to a choice of protecting dogs or protecting people from irresponsible dog owners, the majority will come down on the side of people every time. -E

Green! Said I agreed with you once, but damn, no need to belabor the point. You don't win an argument by having the most responses. You just don't win, period. Yet somehow, I agree with you. Something bad is going to happen this week, isn't it....Friday the 13th! amazed again! --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "Eric L. Green" wrote:

Actually, my Golden Retriever, Buckley, all 100 lb's of him can be the meanest dog you have ever seen in your life. He has bit everyone in my household, some of us badly. Why? He is insane. He broke a tooth, a big one in the back, and it was broke for the first few years of his life, we never knew. It drove him mad. We love our dogs (the kids and I) as much as we love each other. Buckly is the sweetest, most loving dog in the world, but some things, like food and other dogs make him insane. We did not train him that way, he is simply insane. I know, I am a bad person for owning him, but I truly love him, and, the real kicker, my kids love him, though he has bit them all. If I got rid of him they would never forgive me. And when he aint a nut case, he is just so gentle and sweet. Point is, any dog can bite the shit out of you, give the right circumstance, bad news is Pit Bulls, and ROtts both have been bread so long with bad intention, it's in their blood, same as a retreiver retrieves without question, it in-bread --- Gerald Sdoutz wrote:

A thought: as long as we have dogs that bite, we have good cause to have guns, if none other exists. "does your dog bite?" no, my dog does NOT bite! "ouch!!.....thought you said your dog does not bite?!!!!" THAT is NOT my dog. Pink Panther (funnier in the french accent). --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "reddogguy1" wrote:
