need more power on my '04 klr!!!

Jack up the seat, slide the KLR out and slide a XR650 under the seat, lower the seat. There ya go. Getting more power out of the KLR is like teaching a pig to sing. Open the piot circuit, maybe drill the slide, add a 14t front sprocket and you should get better throttle response, but thats about it. The old school engine just aint made to be high output. IMHO. I was going to let this one slide, but I can't. I'm calling bullshit until I see a 40.000 hp dyno run, Mike. By my SOP Dyno (seat of pants), my KLR makes 40 hp too, but I'll bet on a real Dynojet dyno, it's like 36.5. You may be aware of my long standing $50 to anyone that can produce a 40hp dyno with only carb and exhaust mods? I'll even let you throw in the spark plug as long as you haven't done any other mods apart from carb, air box, and exhaust. That $50 has been on the table for almost 5 years, Mike. See if you're THE ONE! Good Luck CA Stu A14 "Scramjet" A13 "$7k and

I just replaced everything below my ass with an FJR1300 :) I have a KLX300R to handle the dirt chores so I guess I'll be selling my A16 pretty soon. Looks cool, lots of mods and add ons... Paul Rio Linda CA --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "klr_pilot" wrote:

1300? Yikes, well we will speak well of you around the fire, and at the occasional wrench fest a toast will be made by grog, in your name... --- Paul wrote:

Actually he's not the only one......(klr 34hp to ground, V-Strom 1K 90 hp to ground, FJR1300 128 hp to ground :-) ) All the best, Mike

--------------- reply ------------------ When I need more power, I replace everything under my butt with my ZRX-1200. However, the KLR is still my favorite bike and I ride it more often. I will also have a KLX-300 (maybe a KDX) soon, to further satisfy my addiction. I can ride the KLR anywhere the ZRX can go (excepting suborbital speeds). The ZRX cannot do everything that the KLR can. If only the KLR-650 put out the same power band, relative to displacement, as does the ZRX, we'd have a hell of a machine. Amazing torque and HP from idle to redline. No reason to think that the Kawasaki could not design such a bike Lastly, my addiction will not be cured until I find a KLR to keep in California so I can ride with you guys out there. (Subject of a future email where I'll ask for help finding one in the LAX-SFO-LAS region.) Mike stuck in PA for now

Not really. But if it's plain old oil rather than filter oil (which is stickier), it probably isn't hurting anything.
> What is the procedure to clean the filter? or is it replace only?
Simple Green (a non-petroleum-based "environmentally friendly" degreaser available at Wally World and elsewhere) in a small container, squish the sponge around in the container to get the oil and dirt out of the filter, rinse the filter with water, allow to dry for a few hours after wringing all the water out that you can, then re-oil it. Filter oil is better than motor oil for reoiling it because filter oil is stickier and doesn't all fall to the bottom.
> Could that much oil cause impede airflow and cause my slight surge?
Too much oil will make the bike run richer. You will then notice black deposits near the tailpipe exit and a notable lack of top-end power. Your surge does not appear to be caused by too much oil. Rather, it appears to be the "normal" KLR surge from too-lean low-end jetting. Check out the FAQ for "pilot screw" adjustment. -E
