first service for 2004 klr

Post by Joseph Jones » Tue Aug 03, 2004 8:12 pm

The dealer here in Middlesboro Ky. told me that doing the service myself would not effect the warranty.(just make sure you keep it all recorded)(some even want receipts showing you bought the right stuff). I had the dealer here(I did not buy the bike here)do my 600 mile service and he charged me $90. that included oil, filter, spark plug, and misc. shop supplies. I thought that was too much, but after hearing what others were being charged, think I got off cheep. They said they checked the valves, and everything else along with the oil, filter and plug change. I had not heard about asking for clearence specs untill after all was said and done. I ordered a clymer manual from Amazon.com for about $20. someone else posted they got theirs somewhere else online for $17.??. I now will do most of the work on my 04 myself, and I will keep a good detailed record just incase. Joe A18 5500 SE Ky --- rsanders30117 wrote:

Setting them tight will maximize duration, aiding breathing and top end. Setting them loose will tend to boost combustion pressure slightly, helping low-end performance. Although the effect is very slight, when I was racing FVs we thought it worthwhile to set clearances on the tight side. In a class where very few mods were allowed, speed was the cumulative product of a lot of little details. If you were running the KLR motor in a spec class, and setting valves every week at least, tight clearances would make sense. For touring and off-road use, looser seems better.
