octaine requirements

My wife and I typically travel around Montana, Wyoming, Colorado at elevations exceeding 4500. We have noticed several things about fuel octane. She rides a nasty old H-D Road King, (although we are trying to find her a decent KLR), I ride an A 16. If the weather is cool, - under 70F and we are at or above 4500' we can run 85 octane. Both bikes will run 87 just fine unless really loaded down and with warmer temps or in lower elevations. My A-16 has never needed anything above 87. The Harley however is a fussy pig and I have to feed it 91+ when temps get up into the 80s even riding solo. I have never noticed any appreciable difference in consumption with the various grades in the KLR, the H-D always get lousy mileage no matter what you put in it. But then it has the older generation fuel injection. Hope this helps some. Ron
