Remember, when it gets broken-in, it will run better, as it loosens up a bit. That guy is a jerk, and should be ignored, if possible.

Ask your buddy to ride to Prudoe Bay and back from the lower 48 with you on your KLR and he on the XR. After doing this he would trade for a KLR. You might have to share your gas with him along the way. Criswell stuckwithlocal241 wrote:

Hi, I hate to go against the grain of this list/board....however, My son has an 03 XR650L and I own an 03 KLR 650. The Honda is bone stock except for the bend handlebars, mine has a Super Trap. He weighs 30 lbs. more than me, but I'm smarter and better looking. 'With that in mind and for what it's worth'....We have not gotten it on in a standing start drag type race....but in a roll-on the Kawasaki will spank the Honda. :-) John Rasmussen Moorhead, Minnesota -----Original Message----- From: stuckwithlocal241 [mailto:dannyg35@...] Sent: Tuesday, September 30, 2003 5:22 PM To: DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_klr650] Unbiased Opinion Needed KLR650 or XR650L - Which is faster ? Hi everyone, dannyg here...... My soon to be ex-friend in work is really ticking me off. 3 weeks ago he drove my new 04 KLR650 home from the dealer for me. (I didnt have my motorcycle licence yet). He keeps telling everyone in work the bike is a "dog". It has a "flat spot", and the old XL500 he had had a lot more power. I love my KLR, he wanted me to get the big bulky XR650L, nobody including me liked the look of it. The guy in work im talking about is the type of guy that only buys the best (according to him). Can someone who owned or drove both the KLR650 & XR650L, give me an unbiased opinion on which on is faster ? If they were both in the 1/4 mile, which one would win. I cant find any gearing specs. or speeds for the XR650L anywhere on the net. All I can find is that it is has a lot of "torque". The guy in work dont understand specs. and gearing. All he knows is that he buys a recreation vehicle, buys a new pipe, has them jetted, lowers the gearing, and then he has the best and fastest machines ever made. Hey Danny, Congratulations on your new ride. You're going to have a lot of fun with it, because it's versatile, rugged, and a boatload of fun. It isn't, however, sexy, exotic or lightning-fast. All the dual-sports have pro's and con's. The XR is better in the dirt, the KLR is better on the road. The KLR also has a fantastic aftermarket, cult following, touring ability, and 300-mile gas tank. But most people who aren't KLR faithful don't get it. You're not going to convince this guy, or anyone else, so I'd recommend not trying. At least in my part of the country, there are a lot of Harley guys who can't imagine why anyone wouldn't want to buy, dress, and ride just like they do. It's okay. They're happy. I'm happy. Enjoy your ride. Enjoy honing your riding skills. Enjoy exploring as much of the country as you can. Ride safe. You didn't buy your KLR to impress this guy -- he doesn't matter. It's unanimous, the guy is a jerk. Get the KLR, unless off-roading is your primary purpose. Then get an XR or DRZ. P.S. Road with MrMoose yesterday. What a beautiful KLR! And Kieth is crazy fast in the twisties. No way I could or would try to stay with him. R

xr vs. klr

Post by Rob Meredith » Wed Oct 01, 2003 7:05 pm

I've always been a big Honda fan and have owned smaller XR dirt bikes and currently own a 1983 XL250R. I've decided that I want a bigger bike (and still keep my XL) so I went and test rode and XR650L. I didn't like it. I found that it vibrated too much and was too uncomfortable. A few weeks later I test rode the KLR650 and fell in love. It may have a little bit less power, but still lots of it and I'm not letting which one has the most power be the deciding factor between the two bikes. Your friend sounds like a real jerk. I would just ignore him. If you like the bike that is all that matters and unless you're going to do some real heavy duty dirt bike riding then the KLR should be fine. I haven't bought a new bike yet but the KLR is going to be the one for me. I'm glad the went to a red colour as well. That should give the Honda even more competition not to mention the much lower price tag on the KLR. I hope this helps! Rob [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
