36!! Now your talking my kinda road. I was introduced to it 3 months ago. BIG WHEEEEEEEEEEEE!! When my riding partners and I pulled off to take a break, they asked me "what were you doing in your helmet the last 20 miles?" I replied "laughing my ass off." They said, "yea, that's what everyone says when we bring them up here." MrMoose A8 (Barbie and Ken special)

Something about a good stretch of twisted road and a KLR that leaves you asking: please, may I have another? Pat G'ville, Nv [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I've been all over up there on my KLRs. After 36, you need to take 3 up toward Callahan, then Forks of Salmon Rd over to 96. Or go southeast out of Mad River on Ruth-Zenia Road, then down into Covelo on Lake Mountain Road, it's all nice dirt, lots of switchbacks. There are many up there that are really fun. One of my favorite areas, saving money to go look for property up there one of these days (hopefully soon). I want to build a TWO type place up there.

I've never been on the Dragon's Tail but I know I have spent time thinking about those roads on Sonora and Ebbets pass we rode that weekend. Heading over Sonora Pass on Sunday behind Pat, Bill and James was amazing. Watching those guys up ahead a couple of turns and realizing the elevation change ahead seemed unreal at the time. I thought I was way out of my league as James was never using his brakes and when I attempted to follow his lead I found it impossible. I later learned his brake light was out.... I remember really working the gearbox in order to have any power at all after some of those turns and then dealing with the steepness of the single lane road up ahead. Then comming over the top you did have to keep an eye out for the decomposed granite and those ever tightening downhill curves. The road reminded me of those new track roller coasters with its turns and elevation changes. For sure one of the best ribbons of asphalt I've been on with my KLR and they sure beat hwy 120 as a way to cross the Sierras. --Jim A-15

...or build just one dual-purpose home. Say, whereabouts in CA are those roads? Hwy 36 & I5: What town is near that junction? -Jim in AZ

Red Bluff....head west on 36, it goes all the way to Fortuna, on the coast. 36 is the Holy Grail of motorcycling out here, at least on pavement, but most guys have no clue about all the other roads in the area. I've spent a fair amount of time up there, camping and riding.

Never did get to see much of those three on the road or dirt. But that kind of stuff doesn't impress me. What impressed me was that when I finally did catch up, they'd be sit'in along the side of the road/trail just enjoying a smoke and the day. Relaxing. True motorcyclists! They never pushed anyone beyond their abilities or made them feel like a PITA. I did get to enjoy the sound when eight KLRs took off simultaneously. Nice! Matt

Hey Bill ! Don't give up all our best roads up here! Seriously, Mosquito Ridge Rd is PREMIUM ! Better than RT 36 IMHO, Just shorter, I ride it about once a week ( not on the weekends though, to many squids left of center). If you guys would like to check it out, with pictures, link up at www.pashnit.com/motoroads.htm . It's under the Eastern Foothills heading. Truly motorcycle heaven. Oh, and Mr moose, I love to ride it on my KLR and my YZF600R, so bring that barbie bike down here and if you can get to the end of it before me when I'm on the 600R, dinner is on me in Auburn. Trust me, you don't have the brakes or horsepower to thrash a good sport bike on that road. No offense of course. Dan, Sacramento A16 01 XT225 03 YZF600R

http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/Highway36.htm http://www.pashnit.com/motoroads.htm http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/Highway4.htm http://tailofthedragon.com/ Equal? Actually, they are all unequaled. The only way the Dragon is better than CA 4 is if you live closer to it. The only way CA 4 is better is if you live closer to it. I'm stuck here in the middle in Kansas, so for me, they are all equally unequaled. The good thing about living in Kansas is that all of these roads are only three days away. Allan A14 B.S. Found a great road north of Napa earlier this month. Think it was west of Oakville over the hills to 12. Sign said something about "Trucks not recommended", so I had to take it.

Uhhhh, I don't use my brakes, and if it's a super twisty road like the premium sections of 36, I don't need horsepower. I'll take a look at it and then YOUR ON! MrMoose A8 (Barbie and Ken special)
