lost ignition key, help with kangaroos

Hello Everyone, I have just bought a used 1995 KLR650 and I have lost the ignition key. The ignition is in the steering lock position. Can anyone give me any suggestions on what I can do? I have contacted a locksmith and he needs me to remove the ignition so he can cut a key. It looks like a big job. I am also after any suggestions on how I can increase night riding visibility. I live in a remote part of Australia and each morning I have to ride an hour to work and I have a lot of Kangaroos to contend with. I am finding it very difficult to see while riding on the dirt roads, which have no roadside reflectors.
