how many people own a "cool" bike in addition to klr?
The XL600R was/is a very cool, ultra versatile dualsport...and red. That
bike transformed me into Lyle Swann in "TimeRider", back in '84. It could do
Anything, even took it out on motocross tracks a couple of times on practice
days...which kinda turned me onto two strokes, & paved the way for a short
career in Mx racing.
My "cool" bike now would have to be the Bandito. Aside from being able to
turn some of life's little irritations into tiny specks in the rear view
mirror, quickly..She gets lots of looks. (yea, from girls too) If I weren't
married, bet she'd of nailed me at least two dates so far.
The positive KLR comments seem to come more from the salty crowd, that've
ridden pretty much everything. Seems to inspire folks to walk up & tell me
their riding history/storys.
side note: Saw a yellow V-Strom with (yellow) factory hardbags & topcase in
the Suzuki tent, at BiketoberFest in Daytona, couple of weeks ago. Slick. And
inspiring in a streety, hard pack dirt road kinda way.

When in the trails, the KLR has the best look of the pack.
In the city, guys in their 30s and up look at it with that "this bike
looks like a lot of fun... is that real mud or just artistically
splashed on"
Now, as far as women go... only the ones I know 'get it', (or they
are just being nice) the rest are totally oblivious to it, specially
when they are at the wheel
.
Now, my other baby... the only uncool thing about it is the rider.
Yamaha FZX750 Fazer, 86'. Non bike guys can't belive it is a 16 year
old bike. Women are just all smiles when looking at it.
Bike guys just nod with respect.

Since I got the KLR two months ago, I used the Fazer only once.
The KLR can take me to way more interesting places. And to paraphrase
one of the giants of lifestyle and good taste "Yeah, dat cool" (The
Ladies Man).
Congrats to all for choosing a great bike.
Eduardo.

I've had more comments in the last three months that I have owned
the KLR than I have had with any other of my past bikes.

I'm trying to downsize what I consider an excess of bikes. Various reasons:
too busy with work, getting old enough to recognize the dangers carving
corners at high speeds, not to mention the expense of owning bikes that are
ridden less than a 1000 miles in a year. This past weekend I sold my Moto
Guzzi Sport, which after five years of ownership depreciated only 11% (about
2% per year). It was in very good condition. Now Moto Guzzi is bringing
out this model:

Probably will need one of these. I'm powerless.

----------------- The coolest bike I ever owned was a '75 Honda CB400 Four, in red. Bought it new in August '75 with my summer's earning as a river guide, then rode it from SoCal to Chicago chasing a girl I'd met on a river trip. Saw a lot of corn on that trip. The girl's long gone, but I still like Chicago. __Arden> their riding history/storys.

Raw HP is a poor judge of bike performance on actual roads. The fact
that HD can turn a 100hp XR750 into a 38hp 883 is an engineering feat on
its own.
Since the KLR is a LOT lighter, a stock 883 would lose (badly) on the
drag strip. And on any road with curves, the 883 would appear to be
moving backwards.

Ok since we are on the coolest bike ever owned
thread, I would like to chip in with my coolest bike.
I would have to say it was a Yammy RD 400, man that
was a quick bike! Light to light it was one of the
quickest bikes I have ever owned. The only thing with
that bike was that everybody I knew that had one
eventually wrecked it because it was too fast! Great
bike for wheelies and for those off the light races.
I still occasionally pick up a Cycle Trader and check
the Yammy section for an RD 400. Hopefully I can
pick one up in good condition someday. My .02!
Cheers!

Since we seem to be on a two-stroke thread, one of the absolutely
coolest street bikes I've ever seen, was a Kawasaki Mach IV motor (750cc
two-stroke triple) shoehorned into an RD400 chassis. The handmade
expansion chambers alone took 80 hours according to the guy who built
the bike. Ran into the guy at Marcus Dairy in Danbury, CT.
"Well, the RD's handle but they aren't fast enough, and the Mach IV was
quick enough but they don't handle well, so I put them together" was his
explanation. Should I be worried that this makes perfect sense to me?
The bike was really, really small with a solo seat and clip-ons.

On cool bikes owned, the first one I had was a 61 Yamaguchi. Imported by a
service man. Year was 63. No one knew what to make of a 2 stroke, 250 cc,
twin. It was low low. Had little idea of what was going on, but it was
fast-so to speak. Only thing faster in town was Shortys' 650 Triumph. Small
town. Found later it was the parent of the famous Hodaka brand. Shoulda kept
it for the past forty years. Restored it would be worth a fortune. I'd be
rolling in doohickeys.
