Ride like you're drunk and everyone else is invisible. Oops, I meant ride like everyone else is drunk and you're invisible. MSF course, as far as I remember: SIPDE; Scan Interpret Predict Decide Execute Have this process in the front of your mind, and it won't matter if people notice you or not. You will be a proactive rider, the controller of your own circumstances, rather than a victim of them. Good luck, CA Stu PS Don't forget to have a couple of cocktails to give you courage for the road, too.> --- In DSN_klr650@y..., "bsetliff" wrote: > > Could some of you long-time street riders share some tips on how to > > get noticed by drivers of those 4 wheeled things out on the roads? > > I'm gonna be new to street riding and have heard the horror stories > > of drivers pulling out in front of bikers, etc. Aside from wearing > > bright clothing, are there any other things you'd recommend? Don't wear bright clothing. They will see you and make you a target (just
kidding). Try and put as much distance as you can between you and any car
(or truck) near you. Always ride like they are trying to kill you. I knew a
guy that built fast sport bikes for a living. I asked him how he survived on
the street and he said "go faster than everybody else and you won't get run
over." This works sometimes. If you ride careful and slow there is a good
chance someone will run over you. I was run over once stopped at light by a
drunk. Pick your lanes carefully on the freeway. If you have special lanes
for car-poolers and motorcycles use them. They are usually less crowded.
Avoid trucks, avoid trucks, avoid trucks. Be always aware that you won't be
seen by most drivers.

getting noticed by drivers???
I read an article once that said it's safest to go slightly faster then traffic on the freeway. Makes sense. Forget about getting noticed. Drivers are looking for cars, not bikes. Think about it. When you pull out, what are you looking for? Strap a florescent spot light to your helmet and you are just giving yourself a false sense of security. Assume every car is going to pull out in front of you. Be specially wary of cars making lefts in front of you. Trust me I know...... http://www.thenaja.com/drunkdriver/cm450.jpg Jason> "go faster than everybody else and you > won't get run over."

There has already been alot of good advice, but check out what can happen
when a car pulls out in front of you, making a left turn, and claims " I
didnt see the motorcycle".
http://www.geocities.com/motormark64/vision.html at least that guy that hit
me had good insurance..
I now follow the philosophy, that I am invisible.. I'm tired of being
pinned, and screwed back together...
So far, the invisible philosopy has served me well. A loud horn helps if
you have time to use it..

I have been street riding since the early 1950s and it is only by the grace of God that I am still riding. My advice goes against the grain of the typical motorcycle rider - independent and strong willed. Ride as if you are a trespasser on their (cages) turf and have no rights. As soon as you demand or try to force your rights on the drivers, you put yourself in danger. There is no way a motorcycle can come out on top of a confrontation with a truck or car. Do NOT ride "on the edge" or over your head or beyond your skill level. Do not show out or try to "show up" other drivers or riders. You can not be too aware or alert. I told my boys when they were learning to drive that they should expect the worse from other drivers - you will get their worse all too often. In other words, in motorcycling, a little paranoia is not necessarily bad. The whole idea is to enjoy the ride and arrive safely. For starters, I would read a professional drivers manual. You want to set
your mind so that when you are driving, you are prepared for other drivers
errors as well as your own.
I found a good book in the bookstore that I would recommend to anyone. Info
is as follows.
Motorcycling Excellence: The Motorcycle Safety Foundation's Guide to Skills,
Knowledge, & Strategies for Riding Right

Could some of you long-time street riders share some tips on how to
get noticed by drivers of those 4 wheeled things out on the roads?
I'm gonna be new to street riding and have heard the horror stories
of drivers pulling out in front of bikers, etc. Aside from wearing
bright clothing, are there any other things you'd recommend? Any
tips?? Anything we can put on our bikes to make them more visible?
PS - and yes, I am going to take the MSF course real soon

Gosh ... after reading this post ... I'd suggest a little professional help.
Take an M.F.S. rider safety course! The new course they offer ( B.R.C.) will
knock the socks off any ideas you have about riding safely in traffic.
