I wonder if we could strap a 120 smoothbore from an M1 Abrams tank onto a KLR650. Hmmm. Recoil might be a tad exciting.

S&W Sigma .40, and a Ruger .22 target pistol. I don't carry when I
ride, but I usually have a collapsible baton in the tank bag.
If I had an extra $600, I'd get a Kahr K40.

Lot's of bikes (even some shafties) can wheelie, some can do stoppies but only the 120 mm equipped KLR could do a "Backie" Fred J> > KLR650. Hmmm. Just a comment. I wouldn't brag or tell anyone how many guns I own
especially on an email list. To many prying eyes. Just a thought.

What do you mean by recent happenings? WTC! How can a gun prevent that?
Chem or biological attack? How can a gun help with that? Break down of our
government? A gun might help you in that situation. However we are a long
way from that. Never the less I will give you my two cents. Buy a rifle
that is cambered for a very common round 223 or sks caliber. That way if
the end of the world is near you will be able to scavenge ammunition.
Pistols are fun toys but not very accurate plus they are not very powerful
compared to rifles.

living now in colorado, seemingly land of countless gun shops/owners, and
with the recent happenings, i plan on buying one in the near future. i've
never even fired one, although i'm a damned good shot with a BB gun 8^)...
any comments, recommendations, referrals, etc are appreciated.
not sure, but i guess i'm favoring the idea of a pistol.

yes, i mean the wtc, and more so its aftermath. i don't intend to "prevent"
a similar situation from happening again. it's not possible with a handgun,
and it's not my job. i simply wish to have the ability to protect myself.
if you think that'll be the end of confrontations of any type requiring
personal protection on our soil, then i hope you're right and i think you're
wrong.

nklr guns !
First let me say I am not against gun ownership. I think all Americans
should own at least one firearm. As for personal protection. I guess if
you are prepared to carry the firearm at all times you are covered. That is
to say if you know how to use it. I have carried a firearm for personal
protection in the past but found it to be more of a pain than it is worth.
I have never once needed a firearm for personal protection. That doesn't
mean I won't. However it requires a lot of training and effort to carry a
firearm responsibly. One last thing remember if you pull a firearm on
someone you better be ready to pull the trigger. If you are not ready to do
that leave the gun at home.

Kyle said, " it requires a lot of training and effort to carry a firearm responsibly". I fully agree. The NRA self-defense courses address the skills and issues involved. They are an excellent starting point. A state-run hunter's safety course is not adequate.
Kyle also said, "One last thing remember if you pull a firearm on someone you better be ready to pull the trigger. If you are not ready to do that leave the gun at home." Again, I fully agree. I propose the following as a personal Bill of Rights: "No one has the right, through action or inaction, to cause me physical harm." As motorcyclists riding on the street, we are all accustomed to taking predictive and proactive action to predict the actions (and inaction, esp. in the case of cagers taling on cell phones while driving) to prevent some one else from harming us. Many of us attend Motorcycle Safety Foundation courses to refine and sharpen our perception and skills for avoiding injury at the hands of others. I do.
Dr. Pete works in an emergency room in a hospital or clinic. I have worked in an ER in a major city as an orderly many years ago. I know full well that an ER can be a very dangerous place. I know that ER docs in Los Angeles carry firearms as a matter of course. I will leave it up to Dr. Pete to assess whether he is at risk and whether he is willing to defend his own life from violent attack or whether he plans to be a complacent victim.
I highly recommend Massad Ayoob's excellent books on the issues involved in personal self defense, titled "In the Gravest Extreme" and "Stressfire". I also highly recommend that someone who wants to learn how to responsibly defend his/her own life using a firearm to attend a multi-day pistol, rifle, or shotgun course at one of the major teaching centers, such as the internationally famous Gunsite school in Arizona or Gunsmoke in Wheaton, Colorado.
