Yeah, I avoided replying to Mr. Fortier's response in the general
forum, but I let him know what I thought in a private e-mail.
As this is a new bike to me, I just want to draw on your guys'
experience and make the bike perform as best as possible. It's not a
matter of not being able to think up modifications for oneself, it's
a matter of finding out tried and true mods.
I've gotten a lot of great e-mail replies, and have added my info to
the phone book database. If ya'll are out San Francisco way and need
a bit of hospitality, feel free to use the contact info for me.

That's exactly the story with me, Jeff. It would certainly be possible for me to run around throwing parts and labor at the bike hoping something works out and is useful, but it makes so much more sense to draw on the advice and experience of people who have been doing this for a while; one day *I* will be able to make a worthwhile contribution, (I hope!), that will help out somebody. I'm pretty sure that's why we HAVE a list like this. I've worked the tails off everybody to get me ready for the dreaded valve check, , but I hope to pay back eventually... Mods can be place in categories, comfort, safety,
performance, durability, off road, on road. One thing
I have been concerned about is the ability to survive
a bad fall and still get home. I ride solo in some
re,ote areas so I bought the better bach plate, Woods
pro bark busters to save levers, and radiator guards.
And other options are your apparrel, gloves, boots,
jacket, armor, weatherproof, easy to drop a bundle
there but at least you have it for any future bikes.

new '01 klr 650 mod questions
Here is my top five KLR mod list:
- add a storage bag/truck to the luggage rack
- add a Mooose bash plate
- change the stock oil filter for a reusable stainless steel filter
- ride alot, wear out the stock tire, replace them with Avon Gripsters
- hardwire and mount a GPS (to irritate Gino)
Things I want to do:
- MAP front brake
- progressive springs
- maybe a pipe
- ride more...
YMMV,
Pat /Austin

My suggestion for mods is
1 - get the best riding gear you can afford (helmet, gloves, pants,
etc)
2 - gel hand grips
3 - Backpack with hydration system.
4 - Carry a spare head light light and tail light bulb.
5 - fuse mod
6 - after market shift lever

With all due respect, your Dsneditorness, I know where you're going, but there are some mods that you want to do before you need them. The brakes and front end dive is dangerous if you spend any time onroad, even getting to the dirt, and you don't realise how bad until you are reading the printing company's address on someone's bumper sticker. Happened to me, didn't hit, but had to hold my nose and blow for 20 minutes to push my pucker back out. I would say the stainless brake line and fork springs are as close to necessary as you get. The T mod is a good one to do before you starting cutting out on the freeway in peak hour with pissing down rain, too. Cheap! Some sort of safety switch bypass should be rigged before that gives you grief. Again, cheap. The license plate mod should be done before you take it off-road, and munch your plate - depends what your DMV charges for a new plate and sticker, you may manage to really trash it. Other than that, I agree, most things can wait until you need them, or at least until you can sneak them onto the visa bill without the SO noticing. __________
point taken Rich, and FWIW, I was playing the devil's advocate..why in the last
month alone I've installed Heli Bars on the Connie...had the seat redone on the
Quota...bought a Corbin for the Connie...bought a headlight socket for the
Connie...very close to ordering LR420 Progressive springs and shock for the
Connie...new bars and guards for the DR350 and XT225; I could go on...and this
doesn't include tires and stuff...
I am a very sick man...

If you've chosen your neighbors carefully, he'll already have a lift and a large pegboard fully populated with professional-grade tools.
