bike won`t start :(
did not put fuel stabilizer into the tank before putting the bike away,
however I did drain the float bowl. I also put fresh fuel into the tank
before putting it yesterday. The electrical system got to be ok since the
plug gives off good sparks (even gave me a good jolt when I touched the
valve cover by accident - better than coffee I tell ya). I am tending to
belive that it is the incorrect cam timing (I did turn the cam a full
revolution once while the tensioner was out and the caps were off) but I did
not remove the cam chain off the sprockets while changing simms. The exhaust
side sprocket arrow points forward and up about 15-20 degrees, the intake
sprocket arrow points backward and 15-20 degrees up at TDC. I am in the
office now btw so I am just recalling these things. I will check the valves
when I get home. Do I have to remove the cam chain first, then align the cam
shafts and put the chain back on the sprockets to do the alignment ?
Well if it is not the cam alignment then I will get busy with the carb ..
never touched that one yet so it will be educational too.
I guess this is what they call baptization by fire ?
Henrik.

You may think Mark is joking about the mice, but stranger things have happened. The buyer of my Boston Whaler came to pick it up yesterday, and about two minutes after we fired up the 90HP Honda it started buzzing and shutting down from an overheat signal. The motor wasn't actually overheating but the signal was there. We finally traced it to ants that had sealed over the two tiny air intakes next to the water pump exhaust. Seems in a drought critters do some crazy shit to protect their water source. -- bierdo> Henrick > > You have spark, fuel, ...air?(check the airbox for mice?) . . . > > Mark S. The exhaust
Uh-oh, that mean you cams are way out. Dont' try and start that thing again. Your cams have rotated while you were working, you need to get in there and put them right ie 0 and 0 degrees. Bad boy. Sounds like (guessing now) that's one notch either side - you might have gotten away with no damage. Hope so. Henrik, I would approach it the similarly to the way you do a shim change with a few variations. Turn the magneto bolt till you're at TDC. Take out the entire cam chain tensioner mechanism and reset it when you're finished to be safe. , Remove the cam caps. Prop the chain with something so it maintains tension and doesn't kink up down low. Then simply maneuver the cams till the sprocket line up parallel to the head and pointing forward with the valves open or backward with the valves closed. Hope I don't have this backwards; check the manual. When you reinstall everything including the tensioner mechanism turn the engine counter clockwise slowly by hand to see if all moves smoothly and the arrows point correctly when you're back at TDC. Put anti-seize on your valve cover bolts. Bogdan> Do I have to remove the cam chain first, then align the cam > shafts and put the chain back on the sprockets to do the alignment ? >

I agree with this advise.
DO NOT ROLL THE MOTOR WITH THE CAMS in place.
Then: Remove the entire Cam Chain tension unit. It is just two
bolts, plus you will better understand how it works. This will give
you plenty of slack in the chain for cam installation.
Hold the cam chain up to take out the slack and roll the motor to
the 'T' mark/notch alignment. You want to keep the slack out so you
don't jump a tooth or kink the chain.
After that, just set the cams in place with the arrows pointing level
and forward. Do one cam at a time. If the arrow on the cam doesn't
point level and forward, just lift the chain off the cam sprocket and
shift over on tooth the the correct direction. Make SURE YOU DON'T
ROLL THE MOTOR TO GET THE arrows pointing forward and level because
this will move your "T" flywheel alignment.
Of course, after you do all this and tighten down you need to re-
check the clearances.
Beat's me how you tell if a value was bent in the mixup. Any hints
anyone?

The entire assembly (possible trouble) or just the bolt & spring (safe) ? Bogdan maybe I misread...you're right if Henrik just removed the bolt, washer and spring there shouldn't be a problem. But if he removed the whole tensioner than we've got a different issue and one which would explain the pointers askew. I believe he said he did both, i.e., first removed the spring and bolt and later the whole thing, so it just comes down to when he moved the engine the entire revolution...
