Well Kurt, I'm a San Diego native (and still here). It's a great city. Crime is low for a big town and the weather is trully 7/24/12 motorcycle riding season. You can live in the east county for reasonable money (for southern cal). Rents are about $1000. Gas cost a couple bucks a gallon for the good stuff. You can ride for 15 minutes to the west and be at the beach. 30 minutes east gets you into the mountains and an hour east, your in the desert. It;s paradise..... Don't come - you;ll hate it...

I have to add some input on the San Diego issue. I grew up in Chula Vista spent 26 years there. I moved to Idaho in 1994. I had definately had enough of that county. It has alot to offer but negatives too. I guess it depends on what your prioritees are. I was getting fed up with the amount of people there and the restrictive noose of living in California. It used to be you could go shooting as close as Otay Mesa when I left you would have to travel 80+ miles to Jucumba or further. The final straw for me was the dam desert protection act Senator Fienstien shoved down our throats. That closed vast tracks of desert in Imperial County and elsewhere that I regularly recreated in. One spot in particular spot Davies Valley south of Ocotillo was a place I hated to be shut out of. Its tough when you spend fifteen years camping in a very cool spot and suddenly with the stroke of a pen theres a gate that says you can no longer enter. I dont put anyone down for living down there its just not for everyone. Dave

I'll differ on that one. Tooling down to Point Loma or rolling around Coronado in some shorts ain't too bad. It's not the kind of place where you'd be wearing gear, anyhow. You'd be on your way to the beach for some ogling or volleyball or something, very mellow. Now the Coronado Bridge, that can be its own rush. Someone who doesn't know it should check it out to get what I mean. All this from a northern Californian.

From an outsider's perspective San Diego is paradise. All those beautiful communities, beaches, mountains, deserts, near perfect weather, little rain etc. The downsides are plenty though. In 20 years the population has grown from 800,000 to 2,800,000 with an estimated 1,000,000 more by 2010. gas is 20% higher than LA and even higher than the rest of the country averaging $1.75 for regular and $2.00 for premium -- self serve. Due to proposition 13, real-estate taxes are fixed based on the sale price of your house (with a few voted on extras). But that means very little increase in education spending in the last 20 years and so many schools are overcrowded and in need of major repair. California has fallen way behind in secondary education, from a leader 20 years ago to near the bottom of the list now. Our landfills are nearly full so expect to pay more for your trash, water prices probably average a small yard homeowner about $100/month if you conserve, electricity is $.23/KWhr which is subsidized by $.19/KWhr making the real rate $.42/KWhr and a proposed 40% increase is comming. Forget about going to the beach in the summer -- you won't find parking and you won't be able to afford a house near the beach. Freeway traffic is now as bad as LA with a 10 mile commute averaging an hour during prime time. Housing for an outsider is mostly out of the question unless you downsize and move to a lower standard of living or are flush with cash. You can also move to less desirable neighborhood than you are used to. It is probably a better deal than the Bay area, but salaries are comensarately lower. Figure $300-400K for middleclass 4BR home. The major attractions are exceedingly expensive for a family outing. Sea World, Lego Land, Wild Animal Park, football, the Zoo, and probably baseball when the new stadium is built will run you an averag of $40 per person +parking +food, +++ -- $200 for a family of four. If you are a golfer expect to pay $100 a round and the few less costly city courses have booking systems that favor the tenacious. There is little off-road riding - most property is private and marked as such. The open space parks are quite restrictive with designated areas. There are some great motorcycling roads but many of those 3,000,000 or so people that live here have RVs and they like to clog up the back roads - it's sort of a giant national park with a 45MPH speed limit. There is lots of high-tech work, and currently tradespeople are also doing well. But if the economy continues to tank, these people will be singing an unhappy tune. All the other creature comforts seem to be more here too, cable TV, movie tickets, dining out etc. We're close to Mexico and it is a wonderful place, but it isn't risk free travel either. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice place and right now I wouldn't move. It's got some problems, which are not necessarily the obvious ones of crime, drugs and secondary education (which our educasion president is going to fix). Death Valley is close and so is Las Vegas. But its just as close to a hundred other places and most people rarely go anywhere. -svt- Enough rant, -svt-

Don't know why I moved here in the first place. Oh, yeah the Weather sucks here too. No one move to San Diego - It sucks. We're full anyway. P.S.
