Talking about bears is almost a KLR issue, but I put a NKLR flag on this
anyway. This came from a discussion group of environmental journalists.
Thought you might all appreciate it.
Before anyone starts saying "Environmental journalists are left-wing
satanmongers," the person I got this from is retired Army, doesn't allow
Jane Fonda movies in the house, and can't say "Bill Clinton" without
getting ill. He also fed me excellent caribou chile at a tailgate. So let
it go!

>On Sunday, Oct. 8, Anchorage Daily News reporter Doug O'Harra writes about
>black bears in Anchorage. His story includes this passage and quote:
>"Imagine
>that the driving force of your life -- the essential reason for existence,
>your mission from God -- was to eat as much as you can and get as fat as
>possible," said biologist Chris Kleckner, who followed (bear number) 756 as
>part of graduate studies at the University of Alaska Anchorage. "If your
>whole purpose in life is to be fat, what are you going to do? Eat a handful
>of berries? Or a Big Mac?"

>O'Harra also writes that, "over the past 10 years, 90 black bears have been
>shot as nuisances or hit by vehicles inside Anchorage's populated areas.
>This
>summer, more than 500 reports of bears roaming neighborhoods reached Fish
>and
>Game. As of Friday, a record 21 bears had been killed this year, including
>14
>black bears shot "in defense of life and property," four struck by cars and
>one hit by a train near Eklutna. In addition, two brown bears were killed.
