Hi All I've used stock tires for the life of my A1 with good success. 6 to 7000 kms per tire. However just ordered a set of Avon Gripsters $120 front and $150 rear respectfully ( Can. $$'s) from the local shop in Corner Brook Nfld. Good reviews on the list[ why I ordered them to begin with] A couple of Questions however; for Gripster users: How do you find them in the dirt? What rating are they 60/40.... 80/20? [ info not in catalog I ordered from] Wayne A1> > I really like the stock Dunlop rear and have gotten over 5300 miles on mine. > I ordered another one from Dualstar and will put it on soon. > > Seth

My Dunlops were down to a slick center band after 2300
miles (the side knobs still had a bit of life).
I recently changed to the Avon Gripsters and find a
marked difference in the on road handling. The
gripsters have a much less squared off profile than
the Dunlops so the bike falls into turns with much
less effort. I found myself oversteering for the first
50 miles or so. I have scrubbed them in now and find
them to grip just as well as the Dunlops on the
hairpins. I have not tried them out on the dirt.
I had no grip complaints with the standard Dunlops
just that they seemed a little too soft for my style
of riding.
I will report how the Avons stand up to my local
abrasive canyon roads.

[dsn_klr650] klr650: valve clearance questions first service
Nothing engine threatening here.> Hi All, > > I checked the valve clearances on my '00 KLR over the > weekend, first service @800km(500Miles). > > L Intake 0.004 > R Intake 0.005 > > L Exhaust 0.005 > R Exhaust 0.008(tight) >
Seems right of me; I'd leave RE as is.> 1) I think I should shoot for these clearances: > > - LI 0.002 thinner shim = 0.006 clearance > - RI 0.002 thinner shim = 0.007 clearance > > -LE 0.004 thinner shim = 0.009 clearance > -RE Leave as is. (maybe make this a tight 0.010??) >
In my experience they also tighten though usually not as much> Am I thinking correctly here? I don't know what is > currently there for shims but just in theory. If > exhaust valves tighten over time what do intake valves > do? >
Not unusual. The more miles the less shim valves tighten. My last check 30k miles didn't have to change anything. The one before 18k changed three shims.> 2) Is this typical? Is this abmormal to have to > change 3 shims on a first service?? I was expecting a > quick check to verify that everything was fine. Now I > have lots more work to do. >
No way , It was just slightly off.> 3) Is it bad that I've been driving with an exhaust > valve that's too tight? I have 800Km on the bike so > Who knows how long it's been out of spec. Could this > have done any engine damage, burnt valve? >
I believe it's only checked at the factory and then at 500k.> 4) If my dealer had set these clearances correctly > before delivery of my bike are these clearances > acceptable or does this show they didn't do it before > delivery? >
Nada to be sorry about; Fire away. Bogdan> Sorry about the list of questions. Thanks in advance. > I will probably have another question or two before I > attempt to change the shims. > > John > A14 > 96 Bandit > 80LTD >
