A number of people have said that the only difference in the two is the rotor, which is responsible for the increased output.
I reported that this is not correct, some time ago. The Gen2 rotor increases the Gen1 output by about one amp, not to full output. It makes a nice increase but there is a big problem!
We have been chasing a strange miss on two Gen1 which have been fitted with Gen2 rotors. The miss is very pronounced in the 2500-3500 rpm range with missing at idle and significant stumble off idle.
The problem is that the Gen2 rotor apparently does not trigger the ignition properly in at least some ranges. The bar on the rotor is about 3-4 x as long on Gen2 as Gen1. The leading end is in the same position but the longer bar seems to cause some issues.
There was a software problem with my oscilloscope so cannot report on the patterns as yet.
I regret that I was not more skeptical about reports which told me that the only difference was output. Embarrassing because I was trusting and did confirm the output. Problem is that I am not riding so only noticed the problem recently. Prior to this, I put it down to sitting, carb, old fuel.
Another example of people talking when they don't know. I hate to be one of them.
