Zero Gen 2 experience here, But, many years ago, the T mod did 2 things for us. One was , provided a separate path for venting when the downwards vent was under water.  Two was, when the bike was laying down and the gas ran out the vent into the tube, it would go down the downward tube to prevent back up into the carb when you picked it up again , hence, prevent flooding the bike and making it hard to start. Had problems with both these issues before my first T mod on my '92 KLR , LOL , also a much more aggressive riding style in where I would go with the bike.
