2014 good year for klrs? (i miss you guys)
I miss my stolen A13, and the camaraderie of the KLR online community (that means you guys). Local dealer has a 2014 for $5500 + tax/license. Odo reads 8300. Any peculiarities about the 2014 models, or is it too soon to tell?
I didn't know how rare and special this community is until I tried to find the same for the DR350 I bought after the KLR was stolen.

JW-IMO, 2cents, etc.
I didn't look up the NADA price...but 'is it a good deal' will be largely irrelevant unless you compare it to the prevailing NADA value.because,If/when your bike is stolen/destroyed, NADA (and even less than that ) is what you are going to receive (if it is insured, damaged in an accident).\
IMO, NADA is the starting point for purchasing a bike; (and I have admittedly paid more than NADA), but there has to be really 'special' circumstances to pay more that NADA values. I also know it is 'OK' to pay more for a bike that has not been ragged out/abused...but you know that. grin.
Why this 2014?; easy-peasy is always worth a little more. on the other hand, you can probably buy two gen 1 bikes w/farkles for what they are asking you to pay for this 2014; IMO the GEN2 improvements are negligible and inconsequential, except, for all the spendy, breakable, GEN 2 plastic that MUST be protected.cough. admittedly, Gen 2 bikes DO have a better seat; I bought one of those =$40 farkle.shrug.but, I could be wrong about the other 'improvement's.
I would suggest you get tire-at-cost w/ free installation, part of this deal. and maybe an HJC Symax III helmet size Large wink . m1.

These are the only used KLRs for sale that aren't three hours away or more. I'm leaning toward the 2002, though it seems the weight diff isn't that great. I found Watt-man's 3/3/12 report on the comparative wet weights. He gets 428 for a 2008, 411 for a 2005 (http://www.klrforum.com/1987-2007-wrenc ... stion.html). But I was fond of my '99, so the gen one's the sentimental favorite. NADA shows "average retail" of the 2002 at $1900 (200 under the asking), and $5465 for the 2014 ($35 less than the asking). -jw

Hi JW.IRT to Gen 1 vs. Gen 2.I personally would favor a bike that had near-indestructible furniture; but that is just me.
Farkles included go a long way in my book, and they are deeply discounted when they are already installed.I see you had a 99'.My favorite KLR is a 98, which we all know, by the superior color (cough) is the fastest, production KLR's. wink. ...which explains why you miss ol' 99 so much. IRT to three hours away, I have used Greyhound to go a little further, and as you might suspect, you will meet some REALLY interesting folks on the bus, by the way, they think the same about you and me. wink.again.
If money is 'not an issue' local purchase makes it much easier, but a less expensive model allows you to farkle and still below the newer bikes price point. The only down fall to buying the bike close by, you miss the joy/experience of riding the bus. shrug.
You probably know this as KLR source points, but offered to those who might be lurking/reading from the shadows. grin; 1. ebay, though Gen 1 are fewer and fewer now days. 2. cycle trader, 3. craiglist search within a 200 mile radius, is an additional KLR source, There is a craiglist feature that allows you to do a nationwide search for a specific item (so I am told) but have never seen how to do it.as well a 4. GOOGLE , KLR650 for sale reveals other KLR's that are not on ebay or cycle trader.Another forum source, is 5. ADV, (you have to be a member), then find 'flea market', then 'bikes'; there are several KLR's for sale on ADV even as we speak.
Several KLR forums allow you to post WANTED: KLR650A member of the Dakota Dual Sport Riders just sold a very heavily farkled 2007 with YZ400? upsidedown forks. That would have been a treat! I regretted not being able to buy it.
You mentioned (earlier) there is a difference between the DR350 and the KLR650 riders/forums.It is because the KLR is a cult, and the DR350; well, that is just a dirt bike.

Bikefinds.com is a pretty good search engine for bike listings across the states.

This sounds like the carb as Fred states or, "really tight valve clearances". Maybe a check of valve clearances along with the carb check. The gas tank should be off to get the carb out more easily, so take off the valve cover at the same time. My 2007 KLR valve clearances were below the min. recommended clearances and the engine wouldn't want to start. And I had only about 25,000 ish? miles on the odometer also.
It does not seem natural that low valve clearances would make it difficult for the engine to start, yet, that was what the symptoms were and solved the problem. After a feeler gauge check and shim calculation, 3 new thinner shims instantly made the bike start and I had a big smile.
