strange meetup at the crossroads

Post by John Biccum » Tue Oct 06, 2015 12:44 am

I’m currently in Clarkdale, MS the crossroads of two US highways that feature prominently in Blues music (US61 & US 49).

Pic here: https://johnbiccum.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Sept-Oct-KLR-trip/n-fTL5dn/i-3gw74Kr

I went to the crossroads to take some pictures and found a group of 8 HD riders there, also talking pictures.  I said hello to a couple of the riders (all had Florida plates) and received zero responses.  I was about to leave and wrote the lot of them off as likely prejudiced against what the HD crowd has been known to call “jap crap”.

I could not have been more wrong!

One of the riders ran over and with a Dutch accent said “very nice motorbike!”

He then asked me the same four  questions I’ve been hearing for the last three weeks:

1)      Where are you riding from (Seattle)

2)      How long have you been traveling (about 3 weeks)

3)      How many miles since home (5300 currently)

4)      When will you be home (whenever I get back J )

He asked permission to photograph my GPS with the trip odometer showing and took another picture of me standing by my “very nice motorbike”.

The entire group were Blues music fans from the Netherlands who rented the HDs in Florida, not out of any affinity for HD but solely because they could not find any other make of bikes for rent.  He translated my answers to the rest of the group and apologized that none of the rest of the group spoke much English…the real reason that none had replied to my greetings.  All were smiles and two stated (thru their translator) that they were KLR owners!
