KLR version is available at Walmart. Buy 3 leaf blowers and mount them to your side racks. Sent from my iPhone On Feb 24, 2015, at 3:44 PM, "'Norm Keller' normkel32@... what is better, best, good enough re: the klr650

Post by revmaaatin » Wed Feb 25, 2015 5:03 pm

It is snowing, again...and there is not much posting that is directly KLR; so, I ask you, is your KLR good enough? How did I come to THAT question, again.... Most of us participate in multiple forums. I have a favorite forum that people show their watches; particularly mechanical watches that are of course, a masterpiece of nearly perfect machines that strap to the wrist. It is amusing to watch some discussions on why some are better than others...similar to an oil thread, yet, I digress. Most of these marvelous little machines are WAY beyond my reach, and within that watch-owner community, there is  a certain degree of exclusiveness, as though paying $$ in echelon's beyond reality gives them a better watch...a concept and principle that is directly transferable to our own beloved KLR community... We subliminally ask ourselves this every time we strap on the beast, the vaunted pig that it is, 'when is this 'machine' good enough'...and fully acknowledge that there are better machines, but THIS one is good enough for me. I submit my watch forum post for your consideration; translate the word 'watch' for KLR and see the applications. Got a cool watch? Let's see it. - Page 660 - ADVrider Got a cool watch? The MM is coveted by more collectors/enthusiasts than the Orient. That doesn't mean the Orient isn't a super nice watch.I have been reading this thread for quite some time, and have enjoyed it immensely. When I initially found this tread, I actually started at the beginning and read every one...yeah it was winter time in the Dakota's...now that you mention it, it is winter again! From this thread, I have discovered and purchased a couple of watches within my present income. Delighted by the suggestions and illustrations of value, and then more delighted to pull the trigger on the purchase. Thanks to all who also suggest the low end, high value watches as well. My favorite best watch is the Seiko 5. Less expensive than the two dive watches that catch on the winter clothing when removing the coat...so they got time-outs in the drawer. I was a professional pilot most of my life who used his watch, with 5-7 complications, in nearly every function and duty. Life is more simple now, and now, my simple watch is now that Seiko 5, which gathered a nice compliment from another pilot who was dead-heading in coach with me, "Nice watch." I bet he rides motorbikes as well. Best for me, is what it simplest. Conversely, I also thoroughly enjoy admiring the upper end watches as well...though they are in echelons-above-reality in regards to ever owning one. The better watch for me, is the one I can afford and the one with complications I will use (and the ones I can still see)! Many moons ago, the good-better-best-bestest discussion was roaring away. One post made this impressionable 'point', as I remember: "They all tell time, more or less, equally. Beyond telling time, it then becomes how much you want to pay for the jewelry aspect of the timepiece you purchased"... or words to that effect. I would also suggest, 'How badly do you want to join the 'XYZ' watch club' as an additional point. Not criticizing, just noting this marketing truth: All brands/markets have a price point that must be broached to enter that 'club'. All cars take you to work, some do it with more style. Style of course garners a higher price point. shrug. What I wonder is this, is 'better' actually defined by something other than personal preference or is 'better', just a function of having disposable income and willing to pay more? Perhaps, better is really a function of, "I like this better." And that is all that needs to be said. shrug. Of course there are some examples where divers and perhaps high altitude, non pressure-suit pilots need a better watch. As a Naval Aviator, I experienced the [immediate] need for a better watch while in a high altitude chamber... when the flat-faced crystal blew right off. The Petty Officer in Charge was not amused. Yes Virginia, there is a Boyles Law, and it is still alive and well. Did not want to buy a better watch, but did so out of necessity. grin. Keep showing us your watches and watch bands. It certainly makes the winter go by faster! revmaaatin. epilogue. Just so you know, I do have a 'better' dirt bike, but the one I go back to is the KLR650 at a ratio of 10:1 in mileage, but readily acknowledge, there are just some places where it is becoming to difficult to pick up. cough.

Not snowing here but I wish it would. Got my snow plow at the ready and it has been a lonely winter. (que Maytag Repairman) I understand the ADV community is fairly robust but it is beyond me why they want or need to discuss watches there. You d think there would be a better forum to talk about your watch than in a motorcycle group. I received a watch for graduating high school and thought I was pretty adult wearing it for a few years. Since then I have never lived any place where having this device strapped to my body was necessary. I know when it is time to get up by the sun, I know when it is time to eat by listening to my stomach and I get to work when I damn well feel like it and I go to bed when I m tired. If I have an appointment to make, I can judge my ETA within 5 minutes of any place I have ever lived. That should be close enough. There are time pieces everywhere you go, in your car, in your house, on your telephone, on your computer, on your TV, you just can t escape time. Never understood jewelry and never wear it. Watches are an amazing mechanical contraption and I appreciate them for that but names mean nothing to me or the status that may come along with them. When Rolex starts making motorcycles, then I ll be interested. And on a KLR note.... I just finished working on a customers older KLR. Typical story, he lets his buddy ride his bike and it comes back broken and won t start. So of course they wait a good part of the year before bringing it to me and all the assorted problems non-use creates. Rust sucks. Why the KLR has so many different types of fasteners and most of them get either lost or changed out to something other than what came from the factory is beyond me. Makes service of this bike extra hard when none of the nuts and bolts are where they should be. One thing I have noticed and would like to make mention, if anyone is replacing the front brakepads on their gen 1 KLR there is an anti-squeal device built into the front brake caliper. When replacing the brake pads be sure that the lip on this anti-squeal device is on the inside of the outward brakepad and not the outside. If you get the pads in the caliper and this lip is on the outside the brakepads will drag and not allow the brakes to work correctly. Martin, I have buddies that have Rolex watches, I have a fancy Gucci watch....that I don't wear much as the band sometimes un snaps. My favorite watch....a Timex Expedition....$35.....has a night light button, never loses time....and is really waterproof. I got hooked on Timex on my last bad motorcycle crash back around 1977. Beautiful spring day, I thought it would be a great day for a ride....after I had drank a 6 PAC. So....I got on my beautiful 750 Triumph twin (yes they made a 750 twin for a short while before they went out of business). Later....sliding down the street on my face dressed in running shoes and shorts, sobriety started taking effect. Picking myself up in a bloody mess, I looked at my trusty Timex. The crystal was off, scratched badly, the hands were bent out and askew....but still ticking happily. I could have done a Timex commercial. Criswell Sent from my iPad
