Shared this post with an old moto head in Kentucky. His response: Ferrari got caught using water injection with their turbo cars during the '82 F1 season. It increased the fuel density, thus giving more power. It also increased fuel mileage a little. Funny, but you would think mixing water in your gas would produce less power, but this is not true with forced induction. Nice article, a lot of the car engine technology used today was developed in WW II fighter engines, such as hemi heads.

Did a quick Google to refresh my memory. Found this:
http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2013/04/18/yesterdays-car-of-tomorrow-1962-1963-oldsmobile-jetfire/ Had the wrong name, Jetfire , not Starfire . It has been over 45 years.... The link above states it used a water, methanol, plus corrosion additives to reduce the detonation (they had no knock sensors back then.) An impressive car off the showroom floor for its time with little fanfare at the time. The Buick aluminum V8 had its pros and cons. Very light and great power, but sensitive to wear (aluminum cylinders). I parted with mine after it started smoking a bunch after some problems with cold starts one winter. Another interesting version was the year prior where they had a rear trans-axle . Independent rear suspension and a long enclosed drive shaft. Watch My Cousin Vinnie where one is key to the defense. I had one, too. My first car, although I owned 3 motorcycles before that. I owned mine in 1972, it was a convertible with bucket seats and a four speed. Nice little car. In fact, I knew 6 people who owned that same car, including me.

I had '62 Olds Cutlass in the late '60s. Researching the car, I found the Statfire version used an alcohol, water injection along with a turbo. 215 CI V8 aluminum with a single barrel carb. 265 horse, 2800 lb car. Mine was the the same engine with a 4 barrel carb, 165 horse. Still ran really well.
