Crocodile  ?!??

I know that's poetic license but give me a break!

Crocodiles are good in mud and water....enough said there.

Crocodiles are low to the ground and have low profile.... on and on.

Not a moose either because those have much better suspension... maybe an elk?

A KLR does about as well in soft ground as an elk, agility similar, speed....  You also don't want to mess with an elk on its own ground. Elk's much better match, IMO.

I assumed the "crocodile" reference was an allusion to the fact that crocodiles date back to the period when dinosaurs  ruled the earth.  But unlike almost all fauna of that period, the crocodile is still among us. How many motorcycles that were designed in the early 80s are still being offered by their manufacturers?  Not many, most 80s-designed bikes are as "extinct" as Tyrannosaurus Rex. There were no reptiles in the Pre Cambrian.  Got to jump way ahead into the Mesozoic to get to reptiles.  At least 250 million years, give or take 10 or 20 million years.
