never too old to learn a new trick
For you old timers, you will remember list member Tumu Rock who competed the Alcan 5000 back in 2002 with our good friend Skip Faulkner. Skip finished first in this inaugural event for motorcycles and Tumu came in second after losing his rear wheel bearings on his KLR and damaging his hub. Tumu rented a car to drive 400 miles to find another wheel to finish his race. Coming in second after taking a whole day off for bike repairs is pretty amazing. http://www.alcan5000.com/2002facts.htm Tumu is now getting ready to compete in the Baja Rally in Ensenada starting next week. http://www.bajarallymoto.com/baja-rally-20.html Tumu stopped by my shop for a couple of days and we took a ride up through the Lasal mountains here with another gal that stopped by my shop for tires and repairs. Marie is from London and somewhat of a novice when riding off road. She took her DR650 around the White Rim when it was supposed to be closed because of flooding but she made it. It took her two days and she had some help. Anyway back to the new trick this old dog learned. Marie was very tentative riding up Lasal Pass and that is fine but I never realized my warnings or instructions about the bears we have would quadruple her speed. She did amazingly well after that and of course Tumu was out in front enjoying his leisure time till we would catch up. Marie asked what I would do if I ran into a bear.... I said I didn t have to ride fast just faster than her. HA I don t think she thought that was as funny as I did. Hurricane Odile has wreaked havoc on southern Baja. I hope the Baja Rally course has not been damaged and I know we all wish Tumu a safe journey.
