and probably tools, shipped down to Mexico. I'm sure EM can ship what
you need, but you'll need the two gaskets, a flywheel puller, the doo
and spring, and the rotor bolt tool. Ideally you'd change the oil when
you do this. You could tip the bike way over so you don't lose any oil,
and just do the repair that way.
If you want to save time, and a gasket, you'll need a set of Dykes to
cut the old spring (makes removal easier), needle nose pliers (or a
magnet) to fish out the spring. This way you can leave the back gasket
and case housing on.
There was someone else who shattered their stock doohickey a couple
years back, and as a result got stuck in some remote Central America
place trying to get parts. But I believe (I think it was a woman) she
had more damage as a result of it breaking. Not sure what happened to
the rest of that story.

4,200 miles on an 07 and Asking while away on a trip?
My first thought was, he learned about the DH while on the trip, as I did 1,200 miles away from hm., during a 4,600 mile trip that turned into a 8,300++ mile trip.
I seen it on stickers and a few people asked, "Changed your Do yet?, and a few acted all worried, So I read up on it on a motel computer and worried all the way home.
And thought about it on the next few not quite so big trips. LOL (changed it at 17,000 or 23,000 would have to look at my book)

Not trying to be condemning, or condescending, or what have you. Genuinely curious. It's the first thing I'd change on a KLR before making a long trip within this country, let alone going to a place like Mexico where parts are likely much harder to find. Especially on something like this where it's a *really* well known issue. Now the guy is stuck down in La Paz, having to get a kit, some gaskets, and probably tools, shipped down to Mexico. I'm sure EM can ship what you need, but you'll need the two gaskets, a flywheel puller, the doo and spring, and the rotor bolt tool. Ideally you'd change the oil when you do this. There is a shop that I can recommend in La Paz.
It s called Motorsport Racing, they gave us a place to work in the shade while we rebuilt my buddy s shock. They are on the corner of Valentin Gomez Farias and Antonio Rosales. I doubt that they will have the parts though, you might want to order those from Fred and provide them. Motosport *might* have the parts, I gave them the part numbers and told them it was something they wanted to stock for the KLRs.
If you need a place to stay while you are waiting for the parts you might want to try the YNK downtown. They let us ride our bikes up the stairs into the lobby and into the courtyard where they were locked in for the night.
Yes, it s always better to do the work before you leave. But it s better to do the work in La Paz than at roadside somewhere.

Just a word on shipping to Mexico. I have had very little success in getting anything shipped to Mexico. It either shows up very late or not at all. I haven t even tried shipping to Mexico for the past year or so but I can only imagine it isn t any better. About the only luck I have had in getting parts delivered to Mexico is to find someone that is going there and have them deliver the parts. Finding that person can be difficult at best. I have also heard of those broke down in Mexico to take a bus back to the US to get their parts but that gets pretty expensive as well. So there are no easy answers getting parts to Mexico. With luck the dealer there will be able to help you. Good luck,
Fred

I can echo this, my friend has tried to ship car parts to people who
bought his stuff on ebay, and the parts never make it.

I think you are correct on that Fred. I was going to send a friend something in the mail who lives in Playa del Carmen MX. He laughed and said I would make some Mexican family very happy. In the book, God's Middle Finger, the author said in one town, the mailman would take his bag down by the river, get drunk and burn all the mail (heh).

If the balancer system is getting out of adjustment you can hear that things are not normal. Sometimes all you have to do is to loosen and tighten the tensioner bolt for things to sound right. You didn't mention anything like that. Are you returning to the US after time in Baja ? If so I would forget about it till you get back. However, if you're on the first leg of long trip, if you're taking a fairy to the mainland and going south, maybe toward Central America, I would find a way to do the job in the recommended shop in La Paz. The same thing goes if you're taking the ferry to the mainland.
