The first would be that the battery was really dead (problem with the plates inside) and charging it wouldn't have helped anyway. The second reason is that the maximum voltage that batteries can take without damage depends on the temperature. If the charger doesn't compensate for that its really easy to cook the battery like this. Especially if the charger is not really designed for AGM batteries. You are really lucky you caught it! Shortly after this they start venting battery acid fumes and things go bad really fast. Breathing the acid is very bad. Prompts a lot of cleanup.
