all electrical out

Post by daveygwhiz » Thu Nov 14, 2013 12:25 pm

Hi y'all, Before I take the tank off to check the turn signal relay, I'll describe the situation, what I've checked so far, and hopefully someone with more knowledge than me can send me in the right direction. The other day my turn signals would flash maybe once then quit, along with a buzz sound.  The next day after stopping for gas then trying to start up, every light and gauge stopped working.  I had to bump start down the hill it to get home. Both fuses under the seat are good.  The battery has 12.6 volts.  The ground is good.  Before I empty the tank and check the relay, please tell if there's other things to check first. Thanks! Dave

I don't know why the turn signal relay would kill all the power. Might be a major power supply wire broken or worn to drop voltage to the cluster. Just guessing, but I'd pull of the tank. Good luck! Problem solved.  Once I had lunch and went back to the bike, I realized the starter switch is not the ignition switch.....duh......and found a multi-wire plug had loosened from its mate. Simple. The starter assembly mounting screw can wait, but that question still stands. How to get that buggered screw out? PS: It sure takes a long time for a message to post.

By "buggered" do you mean stripped threads or stripped head or something else? Stripped threads or stripped female threads in the part can be solved by a larger screw size self-tapping screw, or heli-coil, or jamming something in the hole; even epoxy if you're brave. If you mean stripped head, vice grips are a pretty good first shot. Followed by drills, left handed drills, easy-outs, weld rod, cutting torches and new bikes. But the needle nose vice grips will probably work. Robert Wichert P.Eng. LEED AP BD&C +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ===============================================

chain longevity

Nope, that was DID X-ring or equivalent mid range chain $75-80 iirc. JT sprocket on the front. I hear OE is the best rear but pricey.

The sprockets look like new. Less than 200 miles done on dirt and nothing much besides WD-40 used on the chain. I suppose I won't be a cheapskate & will go ahead and buy new sprockets to go with the new chain.
