speedometer goes nuts

Post by kbangus » Wed Oct 02, 2013 5:02 pm

I was driving home when my speedometer jumped from 80mph to 110mph yet the bikes RPM was 5500 so I knew the speedometer was wrong (that and the fact I was still alive)
I parked the bike for several hours and the speedometer started to behave again. Any idea why this might happen? I checked the cable, it was fine.
Thanks

You have apparently experienced a warp in space-time, where the KLR was actually going 110, but to you, time had slowed down, so you covered the amount of ground that you would have in normal time. Seriously, though - something similar happened to me when my bike was newer and the cable had become partially disengaged from the front hub where the sensor is. Mike

speedometer goes nuts

In my experience this kind of #*!#! comes from the innards of the speedometer where the cable drives a cup that pulls the needle. Very old fashioned. Very easy to mess up if you try to fix it. Very easy to throw it into the trash after trying. Be happy it isn't doing it now, but this could change. Robert Wichert P.Eng. Thanks <><><><><><> <><><><><><>   My guess is something got stuck between the cup and magnet inside the speedo instrument.  Later it got dislodged.   I've opened them up to clean and gently blow low pressure air in that area to remove dirt and dust.   Best, Jeff Saline The Beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota 75 R90/6, 03 KLR650 . . . . .       ____________________________________________________________ Fast, Secure, NetZero 4G Mobile Broadband. Acording to the manual it shouldn't be. Has anyone else found this or did the PO changed the bleed valve with a blocked one for some reason.........Thanks JIm <><><><><><> <><><><><><> I wonder if you have a speed bleeder installed.  Have you tried loosening the bleeder and then squeezing the brake lever to see if that pressure overcomes the obstruction (spring loaded ball)???   Best, Jeff Saline The Beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota 75 R90/6, 03 KLR650 . . . . .     .   ____________________________________________________________ One Weird Trick Could add $1,000s to Your Social Security Checks!
