chain / sprocket noise
When you set on your seat with your full weight do you still have about an inch to inch and a half of free chain movement up and down with light finger pressure? It sounds like you may have your chain too tight. The best way to quickly ruin a chain and sprockets is to have your adjustment too tight. Better to error on too loose than too tight.
I have seen small stones between the front sprocket and engine make all sorts of weird noises. Eventually everything gets ground smooth and then there is no more noises.

Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Chain / sprocket noise
Hi all,
I recently had my back wheel off (2008 KLR650) and when I put it back on the bike I adjusted the chain tension and alignment. To the best that I can determine it's all in spec and this isn't the first time that I've done this. However, I'm now getting a clearly audible click/tap as each chain link connects with the front sprocket. If the bike is up on the work lift I can pinpoint the sound to this location. When the bike is in motion it sounds like I've got a stick or something stuck somewhere and it sounds more like a buzz.
Any idea what I might have done wrong? Have I got the chain too tight? Not aligned correctly?
This is an almost new chain plus front and rear sprocket but it wasn't making this sound when I first installed everything. I had the rear wheel off to do a tire change and now I'm getting the sound. I was hoping it might just be the new knobbies I put on but the noise is definitely coming from the chain/sprocket contact.
cheers,
Nic
