2003 klr won't start
Now that I think about it, I used a the jumper method on my 2000 KLR.
I made it a reversible mod so it could be returned to stock configuration when I sold it. I have since sold that bike.
My '99, I took the nuclear option and cut the wires above the connector and connected them there...Not very elegant, but I can guarantee I'll never have the problem Mr. upside-down forks faced.
Thanks

Stu,
That's a good write up on how to by pass/remove the relay. I just had a
talk with a local rider. His clutch switch was by passed in a similar
manner with the jumper wire just pushed into the connector. This last
winter he put upside down forks on his KLR and while moving the controls
around dislodged the jumper for his switch. Said it took him a while to
figure out the issue but got it fixed.
So maybe making sure the electrical connections are very secure could be
important in reducing stress down the road.
I've had the discussion a few times with folks about why Kawasaki
engineers would have a relay control a relay. Most think it is stupid.
I have a different thought as I wonder if the engineers did calculations
on the amperage involved in triggering the starting solenoid and decided
it was more than the switch contacts could repeatedly handle. So maybe
they added the relay that would take significantly less current to
trigger which would add life to the starter button electrical contacts.
But I've heard of a few guys that have removed the relay and don't have
issues. Just like you.

Listers,
Just saw this on Craigslist and thought maybe someone would find it of
interest.
I know nothing about this bike, where Spink County is or anything else
about this.

Kawasaki KLR 650 595 miles - $4100 (Spink County, SD)
I have a like new 2009 Kawasaki KLR 650 (blue)on/off motorcycle with only
595 miles on it. Never been down, never been off road other than our
local gravel roads. I bought this bike new in 2011. I replaced the stock
windshield with a 300.00 aftermarket one that is taller. I still have the
stock windshield which will go with the bike. The bike has no issues, I
just don't ride it as much as I thought I would. I'd like $4100.00 or BO.

Bottom posted in keeping with SD tradition: Spink County is over in
revmaaatin's former stomping grounds. One county down from Brown.
