moab day 7
Rain was in the forecast for this day and I had no desire to become a flash
flood victim in our intended destination, Lockhart Canyon.
So instead we headed east again, into the LaSal Mountains, riding the
Mountain Loop Road as far as Polar Mesa then continuing east towards
Gateway, Colorado. Most of the ride was though open range country and we had
to convince bovines to get a mooove on a few times to get by.
Gateway, CO was one part the sleepy little mountain town I expected but the
presence of a high end resort was a shock. So too was paying $5.75 for two
shots of espresso coffee and a couple of ounces of milk! But seeing a
mint-looking 1947 Indian police bike was worth the tariff and lunch in the
only restaurant open in town (in the resort) was surprisingly reasonable.
The Green Chile was sublime.
I could not find a place for gas open in Gateway and so headed back west for
Moab with some trepidation, counting on the stove bottle of extra fuel Mark
carried as well as his siphon hose if needed. But it turned out that the
modest speeds of the route, the high elevations and the alcohol-free
gasoline allowed me to make it back to Moab without refueling. The little
DRZ returned the best gas mileage of the week (54.8 mpg) and Mark's stock
KLR also broke 50 mpg on this ride.
Pics 138 though 146 are from this day.
