i regret selling my klr

Post by dat brooklyn bum » Tue Apr 09, 2013 9:18 am

and I haven't even posted it for sale yet. I've been guaranteed a spot on the starting line of the inaugural Baja Rally des Motos this coming October and I need funds to build my race bike. Those of you who have been around this long enough may recall when I first got a KLR I instantly began plotting, dreaming, and scheming about a way to race in Dakar. Well, time has passed, and the millions of dollars that were supposed to come my way have become mired in the paperwork of living the good life. Now time is working against me, so I need to move forward as if Dakar is a real possibility in spite of my finances. This Baja race is the first and only roadbook navigation rally that I've seen in North America, and as such, represents a relatively cheap way to get into the sport of Rally Raid and test the waters. But it still ain't cheap. Unfortunately, right now, the KLR doesn't suit the kind of riding I need to be doing on a daily basis to get ready for the start line. I can honestly say that the KLR has made me the rider I am today. And I can honestly say that I can outride the KLR's abilities - something I didn't think was possible on that first journey through Manhattan to Brooklyn on my new-to-me KLR in January of 2000. I know that when the dust has settled, and I've run my course in rally racing (which could be as short as this one rally), I will lick my wounds and return to the world of the KLR where a man can be happy with a lipstick covered pig. For the time being, I will shed a tear for every mile I've travelled on the venerable KLR - the rivers will rise with the stream of tears. . . da Vermonster (confessional mode off)

I will tie a Big RED or GREEN ribbon around the garage light, waiting for your return from "BATTLE" to your future KLR.

Just because it won't be a KLR do you think we have no interest? What will the race bike be based on? Will the engine sound a reggae beat? Alan A13 Iowa

I actually can't imagine a used KLR being worth enough to finance a trip to Vegas on Southwest Airlines, let alone an off road competition event. Maybe you could just skip a few meals to make up the difference. Robert Wichert P.Eng. LEED AP BD&C +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ===============================================

Thanks for the encouragement, Fred. You were and always will be one of my first ever sponsors for racing! And who knows, maybe a song or two will come out of this endeavor.

KLR riders don't fly to Vegas, they RIDE! I'm actually hoping to sell or trade the KLR to get a 450 woods/enduro bike for training, so I can save the race bike from pre-race damage and run a bunch of enduros/hare scrambles/etc as part of the training regimen. As for the diet, I'm going to a predominantly raw diet starting Monday and I've thought about starting a fundraiser with people donating a certain amount of $$ for every pound I can lose. Obviously, schwag will exchanged based on pledged amounts. Just thinking that something like that shows my commitment to a strong finish and therefore to any supporters (and it's kinda funny, being that I've been an 1/8th of ton for the better part of a decade). --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, Horton Oliphant wrote: > > Just because it won't be a KLR do you think we have no interest? There is only one class in the race, Open - which is 450cc to 990cc. Riding a middle weight bike should be the best compromise of power to handling in my mind. And I already own it, so throwing money at it to make it better is cheaper than buying a bike and then throwing money at it. ;') I actually thought about racing the KLR, but it just doesn't make much sense to carry that much extra weight without additional horsepower.

No, Blasphemy is saying I'll never ride a KLR again. It's also a lie. I love the KLR. Always have and always will. We aren't getting a divorce, we're just taking separate vacations for a while. Vacations where the fake tans are more orange than tan, and the sand is more abundant than the water. da Vermonster

Good luck, Bum. Have a Baja taco on me. They really are excellent down there. Also sample a mug of beer on ice with salt and lemon. Only way to drink beer during a Baja summer. How about some details ? What will be your ride ? A Honda Silverwing scooter ? We are a varied bunch. Skilled competition riders, adventure tourers, aggressive in the twisties types, commuters I could go on. We all tend to work on our bikes. If you want to train in Moab, I happen to know two nationally ranked AMA Hare & Hound racers here in town that would have you huffing and puffing before you know it.
