klr vs. klx

Post by Chuck Chiodini » Tue Aug 15, 2000 10:53 am

Fellow listers: Forgive my ignorance but what are the differences between the KLR and KLX? I suppose the KLX is the more "dirt oriented" bike but it appears to be street legal as well. Same engine, frame? I'm shopping for a DP bike and am trying to narrow down my choices. Thanks and this list is excellent! Ride like your life depends on it! klr vs. klx

RE: KLR vs. KLX Hey Chuck, Check out the archives, there's been lots of discussion about the differences between the bikes: http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=klr650 . I searched on "KLX" and returned a bunch or good posts. And you are correct, the KLX is more dirt oriented, the KLR more street oriented. Motors are different, frames are different, suspension is different. Two different bikes really. I was looking for a DP bike myself last spring. Came down to the KLR as first choice, KLX as second. I couldn't find a KLR at that time in my price range, so ended up with a '96 KLX 650 R, and I love it. The KLX came in 2 different models, the R which is a dirt bike, not street legal, and the C which was fully street legal. The R has kick start, no electric start, turn signals, etc. Mine has the Baja Designs dp conversion kit on it and is now street legal. I ride it to work and it rocks on the road, highway at 80 mph no problem. I've been primarily trail riding with the KLX though, and I'm glad that I ended up with it. If I had bought the KLR, I think I would be doing more road tours with the occasional fire road thrown in. I am still considering getting a KLR if the budget allows, and using the KLX for dirt duty only. We also have a mail list on eGroups for the KLX 650 http://www.egroups.com/group/KLX650  you could get some good info there as well. Let me know if you want more feedback on the KLX, either way, KLR or KLX, I think you'll be happy. staintune ???

Post by Al Maurine » Tue Feb 01, 2005 5:43 am

I have a Staintune on my F650 GS 'Dakar' ... and it does not have a spark arrestor on it. The pipe is pretty expensive and I doubt it would make any more horse power on a KLR .. it did make more on the Dakar but I had to modify the air intake to get all the power .. and the Dakar is fuel injected. The Rotax based engine breathes better for sure. I had a Laser Pro Duro on my KLR and that really didn't do anything for the bike power wise .. but it did sound nice. The Staintune on my Dakar is pretty loud even with the baffle in place .. with the baffle out .. it's pretty loud ... I nicknamed it the 'Barky Bike' .. because it really does bark. But I do get noticeably more horsepower and better gas mileage .. so I live with the noise .. I wear ear plugs all the time anyway. Bottom line .. don't think the Staintune will do any better on the KLR then the other pipes out there. The only reason I have the Staintune is a local guy here had it for sale and I got it for $225 .. like new!
