front wheel bearings

Post by EdgyDrifter » Sun May 07, 2000 9:01 pm

Hello I have noticed a squeal coming from my front wheel and think it's probably the bearing and was going thru the archives to see what was said about the procedure and ran across the paragraph below that says something about shimming the hub? can anyone tell me what this is about and how to go about it? Also any thoughts on the wheel bearings or replacing them would be a help...thanks Mark I just changed the front wheel bearings, the bearings felt good but had 1-2% of grease left in them, changed both to Ingersol Rand sealed bearings, cleaned and repacked the old bearings just in case, they looked good upon cleaning. On removing the front wheel bearings I had to soak the bearing in penetrating oil and then take a torch and lightly heat the hub to get it to move, the manual does not show it but the distance collar comes out. I used the old bearings and a block of wood to aid in driving the new bearings in. I shimmed the front hub out per Eldon's advice and makes a big difference. Bearing are a once a season must to repack.

front wheel bearings

I've just changed the front tire on my bike (getting it ready for Baja) and I wanted to repack the front bearings. The problem is the spacer thing is so tight between the two bearings that I can't shove it out of the way to get a drift at the bearing itself. Any suggestions? I haven't tried heating up the hub yet. Thanks! Karl

When I used to live in Orange County, 10 years ago, the traffic was bad. We used get home from work on Fridays, pack, take a nap and leave around 9 pm. Very little traffic, very high speed, lot of fun. We'd ride to Monterey, Las Vegas, SLO that way and not deal with the congestion. So you're right, my times are a bit skewed. ===== Alex Jomarron West Dundee, Illinois USA __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo!
