questions re klr accessories

Folks: Last month, a mere six weeks after I got my A11, some dimbulb 18-year- old in her uncle's Ford Explorer did the old left-turn-across-traffic- without-looking maneuver and wiped out my beloved mule, sending me doing cartwheels down the highway. Thanks to Shoei and Frank Thomas riding jackets, I sustained only minor injuries (at 40MPH!) but I think my baby may be down for the count. Questions: 1. If I have the option, should I get it repaired, or do what the insurance company will probably want to do, which is total it out? The crash wiped out the fairing, instruments and gas tank but the front forks look fine and it appears undamaged from the tank back. My biking buddies tell me that a crash at that speed does a lot more damage than is visible and that it will never be the same bike, which if true, breaks my heart. 2. If I get a check, my sons have been lobbying me to get a BMW F650. My daughter wants me to get another KLR (but I can't stand that pea green color of the new ones.) I would buy a used klr. You might even have some cash left over. I think the BMW f650gs cost about 8000.00. That is a lot of money. How about the KTM adventurer? The only BMW I thik I would buy is the 1150GS. Of course that is 14000.00. I think I ould look for a used KLR. I would buy a used KLR. Assuming your bike is totaled, I would also buy the salvage rights to the smashed machine and use it as an organ donor. Mark B2 A2

Gary, Take a long hard look at the F650 GS Dakar. I'm in the middle of a test on one right now........and I'm blown away...... Still to early to do any a/b breakdowns yet......... Sorry to here 'bout the dimbulb ... was she blond too.....(:^) In short, your '97 KLR won't be worth very much retail, and from the damage that you stated, the cost of getting the thing repaired would be prohibitive, IMHO. I don't want to sound mercenary, but you'll wind up being into that bike for way too much. Take the insurance money and find another bike. A nice clean, late model KLR like yours should be found for ~$3000~ or so. The Beemer is nice too, but it costs so much $money$... Good Luck Joe Nassif SFNM A13

Gary, Here's my suggestion, let the insurance company write it off and then see if you can buy it back as scrap. Some companies routinely do this. I rebuilt an A7 with severe front end damage: forks,instruments,tank fairing etc. Used it for a year and a half (8000 kms),with no problems. Just because it's been damaged that doesn't necessarily mean 'it'll never be the same' My two cents..... Cheers Steve Pye

Did buy back my '98 Concours in Aug '98 with 18K miles for $1250, replaced left mirror,w/s and welded left saddlebag bracket. ..now at 70K miles it is fine! Low speed drop but that abs and other parts ..expensive on the ins estimate... I just live with a few scratches that most others don't notice! Dan Paulsen Graham WA

Hello all, I have a Y2K + 1 KLR and am interested in a couple of items that I can't seem to find in the archives. I'm interested in Givi hard bags but can't find any websites with someone's personal experience mounting or using them. I'd like to know as much as I can before making the investment. I once heard someone on the list talk about using a film from 3M to protect the tank from scratches. Any info on this material would be helpful. I'm looking for an after market radiator screen as mine was bent in a get off. The stock one is cheesy and if I have to replace it I'd prefer to get something a little better. Finally, I purchased some ramps from a company called Ramp Master based on an article in MCN. They cost about $350 and frankly I'm unimpressed. They started with straight aluminum box stock and bent them into the curved position. The bends are not uniform so the ramps are not the same height. Another problem is they don't attach to each other like the sales person said they would. These are three separate ramps for sure. I'm going to give them a try in the next week or two. If they work, I'll keep them but they aren't worth what I paid. Thanks in advance, Allan
