I'm ready to do some work on the KLR, need to check valve. I have the
manual and supplement but from what I have been listening to there may be
some differences with my Y2K version. I also have Eldon's guide but someone
said that was for earlier models and there were some cam chain tensioners
differences?? I tried the archives but they don't seem to be functioning
for me tonight.
Is there another site with clear instructions or can I just follow the
manual? Eldon's sheet said remove the cams to change shims but after I
mentioned that a few people thought I was an idiot (obviously not as I have
a KLR). I understand you can loosen the can retaining bolts and using a
nice magnet and screwdriver coax the shim out. Been there done that on
other bikes. I also read the post on how to lose shims or other
interesting metallic parts into the case and it seems reasonable to avoid
doing that, not strong enough to turn the KLR upside down and shake.
Anything to be careful about with the cam chain tensioner? Also the manual
call for silicone sealant on reinstall around the end of the cams. Any
recommendations concerning this, is it needed and is so any particular
sealant recommended? Sorry to rehash this but it's probably better than an
oil or tire thread (BTW I will change to Mobil 1 15/50 on my next change).

Couple of years ago I was riding home and spied a nice looking Victor with a for sale sign by the side of the road ($1800). I stopped and chatted with its owner and he asked me if I wanted to take it for a ride. Sure, I said, and got on it and took off. Man, what a difference a few years can make. What was a macho bad-ass ride in high school days now seemed grossly underpowered, dinky, poor- handling, ridiculously slow, and vibrated like nothing I could remember. I'll stick with my new stuff.
