nklr - advice on yamaha xt350

Mighty KORG;

I need opinions on any weak design areas of an '85 XT350 Yamaha.  I'm looking at this bike in terms of a "trainer" for my 23 year old daughter - who claims she just has to learn to ride.  It will be primarily used to play in the dirt until her skills build up.

The machine I looked at seemed underpowered compared to the KLR and maybe some of that sensation was because of the compression not being quite up to snuff.  The only thing really noticeable that may require immediate attention was the noise the kickstarter was making while the bike was running.  Its been a few years since I owned a Yamaha with a kickstarter, but I recall that I use to get the same kind of a noise if I forgot to "fold" the kickstarter back towards the engine after starting it.  This bike has that same sound after folding the kickstarter back in.  The noise can be made louder or quieter by rotating the kickstarter around its pivot point.

Your opinions, off or on-line, will be appreciated.
