help with tires

Post by Henry (Terry) Brigham » Tue Sep 26, 2000 7:41 pm

Hi, folks. I need some advice on replacement tires. I have a fairly new KLR650 with the stock Dunlop tires on it. This afternoon I took a 150mi ride out in the country and down a lot of back roads. Here in South Texas, we have farm roads of gravel that generally peter out into sand. I had the weird feeling that at any kind of speed ( 25mph ) the rear end was trying to wash out and when I got to the sand places, it was even worse. I don't mind changing tires but don't want to throw money away on the wrong ones. I am looking for something with a little more grip off road than the stock Dunlop's but not Motorcross knobbies. What sort of experience have any of you had. I figure I will be in a 50-50 % on-off road use. many thanks. Terry Brigham Rockport, Texas

Henry, That's interesting that the back would feel like it wanted to wash out, usually its the front. You have enough weight to the rear? Punch the throtle alot? Side slope maybe?.........at a steady throttle with your weight back, seated it shoudln't be to radical........ I'd of course let a few pounds of air out of the tires.........say to 18 rear. Checkout the Bridgestone TW41-42's. They don't last long.....but what does? ...and they handle twistes sweeeeeeetly. Slide Henry (Terry) Brigham wrote:

the dunlop mt21's are about as aggressive ("motocross"-like) as you can get street-legal. however, dunlop makes another tire with a similar name (mt-something?) that's kinda intermediate. i'd suggest no less aggressive than that if you really want to grip with any satisfaction in sand. that being said, i really like the avon gripsters on the street (super-sticky), and they will get you around in the sand if you have a reasonable amount of skill. be warned, however. the klr is not a dirt bike, and any amount of knobbies on the tires make a great difference. _pete -----Original Message----- From: Henry (Terry) Brigham [mailto:hbrigiii@...] Sent: Tuesday, September 26, 2000 8:38 PM To: DSN_klr650@egroups.com Subject: [DSN_klr650] Help with tires Hi, folks. Hi Terry I run Pirelli MT21's but I gues the are a bit knobby for you. I like them a LOT on is OK OFF is a different world. I ran stock tire at 14 psi front 12 psi rear off road on powder and gravel 12 and 10 or less in mud. Worked pretty good, except in mud and such. Regards, Brian A14 D17

Do not go with the Dunlop Trailmax then, cause you will be picking yourself up from the ground most of the time. But there great on the road!!!! Van A7

Many thanks to all who responded to my query about tires. Some very good sugggestions ranging from " learn how to ride, to, less air pressure, to any number of specific brand models. I think I will try lowering the air pressure first and then maybe MT21s. Thanks again, Terry

I like my KLR! I really do! but.... It is a dual sport. And a Kawasaki no less! I would much prefer to replace my half spent rear MT21 rather than spend neary 60 dollars on wax! How about using some good old zip wax car wash after each oil change?? http://www.zymol.com/talon2.htm Joe
